Don't really have a problem with my Kimber of Oregon Lefty but I am starting over load work up and thought it a good time to switch over. In the past I have had good results with R15, H322, 3031, BLC-2, 8208 and some others. Looking for mach 4 speeds with 20 grainers. Any pet loads appreciated too. Thanks

I'd try CFE223. Pretty sure IMR4166 would work, but Hodgdon doesn't list any data for it in the .17, and CFE223's a spherical powder, and they slide a LOT easier into .17 caliber necks.

Will the more or less standard Remington 7&1/2s or Br2 primers fire them up well?

Try Big Game.

Or IMR 4320.

Tejano,

Perhaps I should have asked whether by "anti-fouling" you mean a decoppering agent, or clean-burning?

Yes de-coppering and low carbon is good for the small bore. CFE223 looks good and easy metering is nice for the tiny neck. Now if I can just avoid pinching my fingers while seating the bullets. I am tempted to get a Vickerman style seater but read that run out can be higher with them, is this true?

In my experience Vickerman-style seaters result in straight bullets--as long as the handloader does all the standard stuff, like selecting brass for reasonably consistent neck thickness, and sizing it straight.

When loading .17's I've mostly used Redding micrometer seaters, which work very well and are lot quicker.

Get a pair of large straight medical forceps, and use those to handle the bullets.

Or have a kid help you. They like to work with the little bullets.

Thanks all on my way to some wicked loads with the Controlled Chaos 20 grainer. I would like to find a semi bonded 25 grainer for deer.

Been using IMR 4320 for 20 years and have not had an issue with fouling in my 17 Rems.

My load development stopped for both 20 and 25 grain bullets when I tried CFE223. I get outstanding accuracy and little fouling along with high velocity. To be completely honest my rifle didn’t foul badly with any other powder either but I don’t see any drawbacks to whatever decoppering CFE might do.

All my helpers grew up. The forceps sound good. I used to keep some on the bench to take out single grains of powder but lost them at some point. I will buy three next time I see the long ones for sale. Learned not to campfer the cases to a sharp edge the hard way, ouch.

I use Cfe 223 and a Forester seater in 17s with 71/2 remington primers.
