I know there are some active and retired cops who post here. Some probably have heard about the murder of a kidnapped LAPD officer out in an onion field south of Bakersfield, Calif., in 1963. Joseph Wambaugh, former LAPD detective, wrote a book about it and a movie was made from the book. What you might not know is how the killer made a plan to escape from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Dept. jail where he was being held for trial. This is an interesting read from the LASD Museum archives. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/j0jqt9ik...ledInATypewriter_March2017Dispatcher.pdfL.W.

I read that book nearly 30 years ago, I guess. I was aspiring to a career in Law Enforcement at the time. Caused me to do some soul searching before taking a job.

First movie I recall James Woods doing. It took me a long time to watch him in any other part and not hate him! Good actor.

I think you guys are lying about your age, or you read the book after it had been out a while. I have to concur about soul searching my career path in LE after reading the book 40+ years ago and absolutely hated James Woods for years after the movie came out. The book should be required reading for all new LEO recruits for many reasons.

I sin often, but I lie very little. I read the book after it had been out for awhile.

Dan Chamberlin: The movie "The Onion Field" was Ted Dansons first movie. I enjoyed the movie but the book itself was compelling and very impactful on my professional life. I very much enjoy Joseph Wambaughs works and his writing. By the way his book "The Choirboys" is officially rated in the top 100 mysteries of all time! And that my friends is quite an amazing achievement for an ex-Marine and a street cop! By the way I have been to more than my share of nurse and waitress attended "choir practices"!
