hey guys, I have a real stumper here for you today, I would sure appreciate some opinions!

NOTE: I AM LOOKING FOR CURRENT VALUE OPINIONS, NOT "IT'LL COST YATTA-YATTA TO FIX"

Sorry about that being like that in advance, I am trying to keep it focused on price!

Anyhoo.......I need some help determining value for a friend: in the album attached below are pics of a Remington 581 in a 541 stock. A local gent built this gun over 20 years ago for some informal club-type target shooting, then rarely-if-ever shot it. it has been in my possession for about 9 & the thing is stupid-accurate. Gun is nearly 100% , BUT, it has an issue: The man who built this honed the trigger down to mere ounces, BUT, as a result, the only way to apply the safety is to lift the bolt! if the bolt is up, you can apply this safety and it works, no prob., but once released, the only way to reapply the bolt is to lift the bolt again. I tried releasing the safety and ‘slapping’ the butt of the gun and it does not discharge, but again, the safety is workable only in the process described above. Gun shoots great, but it has this obvious issue. The action is virtually 100%, barrel is uncut and only the rear sight ASSY removed. the stock is 99.99%, see the tiny safe-nick on the stock. As you will note, the 581 had a lighter profile barrel, and a shroud that made up the rear sight. The guy used some type of polymer to account for the difference in the 581's narrower barrel diameter. Yes, gun comes out of stock no prob. It is a fantastic gun, even has pretty straight-grained walnut, but the question becomes, what is the value of the gun in its present condition?

Worth noting that when I shot it and the few times I hunted with it, I just left the bolt up, then rotated it down when I saw Mr. Squirrel or was ready to shoot Mr. target.

Honestly, with the issue you descibed, it's a parts gun as far as I'm concerned. If it were mine, I wouldn't sell it unless I fixed it first.

I like them, just put a new scope on the one I got for Christmas in 1967, but this looks like a classic bubba special. The stock might bring a few bucks since they're hard to find now.

The first thing I see is that the stock is not a 581 stock, it from a 541 T , which in my opinion is an upgrade, the 541 T stocks were available cheap for a short while from one of the used gun parts houses as to value my guess is the value is 150.00 max as is.

I In the past year I have seen some 581's in different gun shops the prices have ranged from $95 for a beater to $175 for a really nice one (near NIB condition, so there is not much value in the one you have - I would think anywhere from $125 to $150.

Iambrb - for the safety problem take a look at the trigger housing, it is a cheap piece of cast aluminum, almost like a pot metal of some sort.
The trigger housing is held in place by a roll pin and the trigger is snugged against the action by a small screw at the front of the pot metal trigger housing, quite often this housing is cracked where it makes a 90 degree transition from the large part of the housing to the extended portion that holes the screw used to snug the trigger to the action.

My description is about as clear as mud when reading it but as soon as you look at the housing you will see what I am trying to describe.

If the housing is cracked let me know and I will describe a fix that I used on one that worked out well. Triggers for the 581's are scarce as hens teeth and the only option is a Timney Rem 788 trigger and if I recall correctly it takes a little modifying to get it to fit the 581.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

I have a 581 that I put in a 541 stock many years ago. I've won matches with it. If you're selling, let me know your price. Thanks.

I prefer classic.

@OP,

To answer your original question, as noted above, with the malfunctioning safety, it is basically a parts rifle. $100 ???

I put a Timney 788 trigger on my LH 581 earlier this year. I think the LH 581 rifles used the same RH safety as the RH 581 rifles. If interested in a LH 581 factory take off trigger ($75 shipped), shoot me a PM. It pulled approx 4 lbs on my rifle before I replaced it.

For those who state it is a "Parts Gun" IMHO it needs a $75.00 trigger which should make it as $ 200-250.00 rifle, as for parting it out it is worth EVERY bit that

Bolt on Flee Bay & $ 90--150.00
Stock $ 150.00
Action $ 50 100.00

Magazine $ 25---50.00

The action could be sold with or without the barrell

iambrb, if you decide to part it out, I would be interested in the stock. Just shoot me a PM. Scott.

With the stock being altered, I'm not it would bring that kind of money.
