I was wondering if I could get some advice on once again. I am in the process of getting a barrel ordered for an 7stw build, but I can not choose between a 1:8 and a 1:9 twist. I plan on using bullets that are between 160 and 175 and using it for deer, elk, and long range shooting what one would fit my needs the best and what brand
thank you!

A 9 twist will be fine for bullets in that weight range.

Jordan Curious why 8 twist? If the OP wanted to shoot 180-195gr I could see that. Also if the OP is having a barrel made then ok.

Not to mention the STW is going to be right at home with 180’s and that’s The undoubtable evolution Of where the OP will end up.

go with the 8 twist and kieger barrel is an excellent choice, with that much powder for a 7 stw I would shoot the heavest grain barnes x bullet..

Jordan Curious why 8 twist? If the OP wanted to shoot 180-195gr I could see that. Also if the OP is having a barrel made then ok. Because good-quality bullets are only getting longer. A 9” twist is already marginal for some of the best LR bullets in 7mm, and 8” isn’t excessively fast for even the lighter 7mm bullets. For the criteria given in the OP, 160+ gr bullets used for LR shooting means that an 8” twist is ideal, given current bullet technology. Even the 175 ELD-X is best served by an 8” twist, let alone the 180 ELD-M or the 195 Berger. I just sent back a 7mm barrel I custom ordered because it arrived with a 9” twist, when I spec’d an 8” in the order...

I agree if the OP wants to build a LR rifle and shoot long slick bullets which I would definitely recommend. The 180/195 7mm bullets are amazing.
CHS What's the specs on the rifle so far? Have you given the 180/195gr LR bullets much thought?

I have not given those bullets any thought. I only plan on staying within the 160-175 bullet range but all of this information is great to me

9T should stabilize up to 180’s just fine depending on the barrel and velocity, but nowadays I would go 8T and never look back. The 8 will do great with 160-175 class bullets and is best with the 180-195 class bullets that you will likely transition to if you get even semi serious about the LR game.

Is anyone making a factory 1 in 8 twist 7 Mag?

I think the only factory rifle to come with an 8" twist 7mm barrel is the Fieldcraft in 7-08.

A 9 twist will be fine for bullets in that weight range. +1 in a 7STW

I just ran the 9 twist at 3000 fps with a berger 168 at o altitude using bergers twist calculator and it was fully stable and I think that is being conservative velocity with a 7 STW

I ran 168 Bergers 3140fps and 175gr Hornady Spire points 3100fps out of my 7STW.My rifle is a Remington Sendero factory barrel.I think it's 1-9 1/4 twist. No problem with the175gr.They were very accurate. The problem I had with Bergers are they are so long and the 7STW case is very long,I run out of mag box before I could even get close to the lands with them.I would have to load single shot to get close to the lands.
