That 2.5-8 that you have used for years is one of the best scopes Leupold makes. Reasonable magnification, small size and light weight. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one of those.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

Yeah, if spending $300 or more for a compact, clear, and easy-to-use scope, I'd get a new 2.5-8 VX3i. If a bit more size is not an issue, the 3.5-10x40 version is pretty much never a bad choice on a big game rifle.

I’ve had real good success with a Sightron SII Big Sky 3-12x42. I’d put that glass besiide a Vx3

+1 also look at the Weaver Classic K4(I've got one on MY 257 Roberts), about the most scope for your money out there.

Tasco, but only if it has Tally Rings.

You can pick up better bargains on some close outs, For example, Leica ER (this is the best bargain out there, great glass and made in Germany), and the Old Zeiss Conquest.

I would suggest another leupold....this tracking thing everyone talks about I have never experienced...all my gold rings are flawless...only warranty issues was a target knob fell off on a varmint rifle and a small lens separation on a 30 year old vx3 that they replaced the whole scope...
Only other brand I use is Burris..they are really clear and have held up well...
On that 257 Roberts a leupold 1.5x5 30 mm would be perfict...

For what it's worth my 257 roberts has worn the same 2-7 Leupold for years and I can't recall ever touching the turret caps since I sighted it in the first time. Well that's not exactly true I do touch them when I wipe the rifle down 😀

If you're going to set-n-forget, most scopes get it done without a problem (than any other brand in comparison).
