Simple question.....Anyone know if treating a barrel with the black nitride process prolong barrel life?

Melonite treatment does.

Nitriding barrels has been shown to markedly increase life. BTW it is not a "coating" but a surface transformation process, where nitrogen (or nitrogen and carbon in the case of processes like Melonite or Tenifer) is diffused into the steel near the surface to change its composition and properties.

A type of case hardening.

That would be very handy on bolt and lug recesses.

When I built my 300 wby on a sako action all the metal got melanite....it makes the bolt really slide in the action...the barrel has held up well as far as the outside ...inside its way too early to tell....still less than 50 rds...

Who are some of the better Nitriding outfits that will do a single barreled action? Should I break in the barrel first or have it done on an un-fired barrel? Should I bead blast or wire brush it if I want a matte finish?

I hope to send a barrelled action to Hef. I don't shoot mine anymore before sending them. If you want matt, bead blast it.

Corrosion resistance is fantastic...my sako has been used pretty hard and no scratches or rust ....just looks good...
Somthing to keep in mind...the hardness actually makes the barrel slicker thus less resistance so less pressure....factory loads will be likely slower....hand loads will just take a tad more powder....could be a problem if you interchange ammo....if you run your loads aganst the wall.
