If you could only have one scope to be on the rifle you would use to protect those dearest to you AND provide meat for the table what would it be? Only another way to ask the question of what scopes hold zero in harsh conditions and have the optical quality that you desire as well as the ability to track well to get zeroed in the first place. I put them in the order that is most desirable for me. Feel free to put them in the order that you feel as most desirable. For me it would be: Leupold VX3 2.5-8x 36mm I know there are better scopes out there but this is the best that I own. Go for it!

the best most durable scope made is still just a leupold 6 power what is on leupold box 6x42 tuffest scope ever made with adjustments in the scope.

Nightforce 2-10 x42 NXS is probably the best do-it-all and could fit-on-any-rifle scope I own. Pretty sure it tracks and holds zero as well...

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

You have two totally different concepts in your question. Change it and maybe get more responses.

Bushnell LRHS 3-12x44mm is the "best" I can currently afford. If price was no object then Schmidt and Bender 3-12x50mm PM I I / LP P3L Reticle Single Turn 1cm CW Dial

Ringman, did you mean that the rifle to protect the family and the rifle to procure meat would be different rifles and therefore need different scopes?

Leupold VX-2 1-4x20 or a Leupold 2.5x20mm both are very tough little scopes, hold zero. More than enough to feed my family. I've been using them for years. Earlier in my life I lived a subsistence lifestyle, hunting, trapping, fishing, gardening and gathering almost all our needs. Weaver V-4.5s and K-2.5's did the job then and the Leupolds are just updates of those scopes.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

If weight weren't an issue- LRHS 3-12x. To handle any possible scenario fairly well- SS 3-9x.

Under your scenario I ain't going to be twirling.
Leup 1.5-4, 1.5-5, or 2.5-8.

Ringman, what are your suggestions for optics necessary to protect your family. And what would be your pick for a hunting optic?

I am going to assume from the heading that it is one single scope that can not be replaced so has to be near faultless on a firearm that will do it's work from ten yards to 400 yards in a pinch, with the majority being of a hunting subsistence tenor.
I would choose a straight 4x in a longish tube and of at least Leupold quality, in point of fact an old 4x Leupold would suffice quite nicely.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.
