Put me down for a Winchester 1895 lever in 400 Whelen (or 9.3x62). All set up for dark timber hunting... large ring peep and and a sourdough front sight. I think that would be the cats azz.

Last July, ambling slowly through OH, PA, NY, & MA to go visit a traveling Mrs. FC, I found this li'l guy @ Pete's Gun Shop in Adams, MA:





I got it because I was sniffing around for a 1903A3... , so that definitely fills the, "for the hell of it" criteria.

And I just LOVE that thing! It's hard to believe a 70 year old rifle with iron sites will out-shoot some of the present-day rifles I've dicked-around with. I mean, I do use those newfangled TTSX bullets in it, but it's still hella cool.

Of course, now that I think about it, I think I've only ever had 3 rifles that I ever bought with a true purpose in mind, and I sold 1 of them within a few years. Of the other 2, only 1 is being used for its purpose. So EVERYTHING else has been, "for the hell of it!".

M1 Carbine. Serves purposes well when I have a spray and pray flashback. It's death on beer cans, annoys liberals and doesn't mind sitting in the vault for months on end while its peers get out for regular exercise.

And a 1894 Marlin with close to a century in the rear view.......

Some kind of falling-block single shot, no doubt about it. If your eyes are up to it, get one with irons, but there are good options for vintage-style scopes too.

The more I play with the ones I have, the better I like them. No magazines to stuff or cause cartridge-length problems, just plunk one in and shoot. If you go rimfire, you don't even have to pick up the brass. Small centerfire rounds are fun too: .22 Hornet, .32/20, .357, .44s etc. New Winchester Low Walls and decent Eyetalians go for about $1109-$1200. If you're feeling prosperous, there are a couple of small domestic outfits that make nice ones too, at a price of course.

Dont know how many times I have to tell you guys...I mount scopes far back for two reasons...

1) I have thick coke bottle bottom glasses, which screw up eye relief...and...

2) JeffO told me to do it that way, and I always listen to him....

No practical reason to own one but probably a lightweight, takedown BLR in 358 Win.

Edit: alternately, I believe it was Sauer who made an elegant, "civilian-styled" semi-auto .223 of high quality decades back. A bit heavy and pricey but as much art as machine -- I could almost justify one of those.

I have thought about it quite a bit and can't think of one I would want that I don't have...
