Lotsa threads about "best" rifle for long range, light, mountain, price, yadda yadda....But what would you buy just for the hell of it? Sure, you might hunt with it, but not necessarily a "purpose" driven choice or some fang dangled cartridge that's cool for the moment.
For me, I think it might be one of the circa 1980'ish pimped out Weatherby's in 257 or a jacked up Mauser actioned 7x57 with open sights. Kinda Robert Ruark Africa style.
No real reason, just kinda cool to have sorta thing.

Maybe a 45-70 levergun. A Rossi R92 .357. A lightweight.223 bolt action.

AR15. I’ve had a few but never could warm up to them. Especially when I tried to go higher end. I need to try a $400 one. That I might actually like

Kimber montana in .223 and... Remington 673, any caliber would work, but I went with .308 can't beat the tiger laminated stock and full vent rib barrel!

I have enough rifles, but the one I picked up recently just because is a MINT Yonkers Kimber K22 Classic in 22LR. I put a VX-III 4.5-14X40 A/O on top, and it averages under a minute out to 100 yards with SK Std Plus. Sa-weet little rifle!
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Probably a 12 gauge or a 45/70 and I'd shorten the barrel and stock as much as legally possible and carry it when hiking in the wilderness mountains in Montana where more and more Grizzly are showing there face.

Superb, from a maker few have even heard of. An old friend, dead for several years now, had one of THE finest collections of single shot rifles anywhere and doubles, as well.
Some 40 years ago, he sold a minty, H&H Royal .375 Flanged, to some Aussie tourist in my hometown, the case was lost, but, rifle pristine, for $2600.00 CDN......I just missed this and still dream of it!
I dunno about this as I am becoming more aggressive at selling my guns, still 40+ and won't buy another, but, if a really choice German or Ferlacher, "Bockbusflinten" were to turn up, 7x65r-16.70mm, with claws and rings for two US 1" scopes, engraved, super wood and good irons, welllllllll..........have a nice one, 7x57r-16, a Browning 7500 .309x12 and a Merkel 9.3-74rx12, but, somehow the 65r just calls to me.
The only other would be a full house 9.3x62 on a roundbolt 21 action, best of everything, by my friend Ralf Martini, and I am tempted, but, want the bux so we can travel more than another rifle. Must be gettin' old!

I think I'd pick a Winchester M92, caliber wouldn't matter too much, 38-40 or 44-40. Also, at one time I had a collection of the Argentine Mauser carbines, 1891's and 1909's. Though the 1909 DWM made Mauser was probably one of the best ever made, there was just something about those little 1891 Calvary Carbines that I loved. Wish I hadn't sold the one I had.

Brno Mdl 21/22 sans scope, or maybe a Winchester M54.
Always wanted either a Win 71 or 64 in the lever realm. Hell even a nice older 94 would be a neat change in paces from bolts and pumps.

A Browning 1885 low wall in 22-250 or 260 would be pretty cool.
Or a 1895 Win in Krag, repro or not.

I did it a few weeks ago. I saw a 1936 Mexican Mauser with a fiddleback walnut sported stock and before I knew it, it was on the way to my dealer. I thought the barrel was likely toast but the rest looked really good. Always wanted one of those to play with.

It’s not actually that far back- It just seems like because the front half of the scope can just barely reach past the end of the magnum length action that 223 comes with...
If that scope has any eye relief at all he must have his neck cranes backward to get a good cheek recoil pad weld.

I have never had a Rimfire and have long been curious about them and thought I'd try one "Just for the hell of it".
I like "V's",so figured I'd order a Vudoo V-22 and because I couldn't get a Blued Factory barrel on it and like "B's",I opted for a Bartlein. Was worried about it being heavy,so asked for 18",figuring in 22LR it'll still go 2000fps. Thoughts?
Though I do not know what a contour is,I do like "S's" so went with a Specter,if only for Phil. They asked me about MOA's and I didn't know what that means, but ordered 30 of 'em,figuring I could sell any spares that got in the way. Wanted a Blued trigger, but could only find them in Stainless, but luckily it will be hid where it can't be seen. I don't like "O's" so only ordered 2 Ounces.
Was hoping to nab a Spruce stock(light/strong),but because I like "M's" I ordered one of them there MacaMillion's in Anti-Kneel coloration, which is an Old Glory fade in a Medium Weight, because I like "M's" as mentioned prior. Have never had a scope before, but because scope starts with "S" and I like "S's" anyhow,I ordered one of them there S/S's the Texans like to brag up. Never did like "X's" so only got (10) of them. I'm not sure what the rings are,but they've got alotta screws in 'em and I like "S's",plus they take shingles in the middle.
I hope to have a gun that will shoot 1" or so at 25yds,because that sounds like fun to me.
Good talk,I am learning a bunch.
Thank you.

Lately I'm close to the decision that I own most of my rifles "just for the hell of it". It's not like I hunt with them or even shoot a lot of them but they are here. I have rifles I haven't fired in 5 years and more and others that I've had built 5 years ago and have never hunted. They must be here "just for the hell of it".

Nothing very exotic but was cruising GB a couple of years ago and saw a M70 FWT in 270 made in SC. A cheap Jack O'Connor tribute! It has become my go to hunting rifle.
I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all. Jack O'Connor

I did a 450 Marlin on a Rem 7 action with a 20" barrel from Pac-nor with the funky, laminated 673 stock. Shoots 300 grain Barnes at 2450 fps into 3 shot .75" groups at 100. This gun is a riot! Its my new dark timber and bugle season elk rifle.

For years I’ve had a craving for a rifle of absolutely no practical value for me, and it’s a decent quality side lock double with claw mounts and a pop up tang sight and ivory front bead that pops up. It will be chambered in .30-40 Krag, .303 Brit or 7x57R. It will be regulated at 100 yards with an appropriately heavy for caliber RN. Like I said, not practical, but for some reason I want it.

Put me down for a Winchester 1895 lever in 400 Whelen (or 9.3x62). All set up for dark timber hunting... large ring peep and and a sourdough front sight. I think that would be the cats azz.
Thanks, Tom

But what would you buy just for the hell of it? Sure, you might hunt with it, but not necessarily a "purpose" driven choice or some fang dangled cartridge that's cool for the moment. Last July, ambling slowly through OH, PA, NY, & MA to go visit a traveling Mrs. FC, I found this li'l guy @ Pete's Gun Shop in Adams, MA: I got it because I was sniffing around for a 1903A3... , so that definitely fills the, "for the hell of it" criteria. And I just LOVE that thing! It's hard to believe a 70 year old rifle with iron sites will out-shoot some of the present-day rifles I've dicked-around with. I mean, I do use those newfangled TTSX bullets in it, but it's still hella cool. Of course, now that I think about it, I think I've only ever had 3 rifles that I ever bought with a true purpose in mind, and I sold 1 of them within a few years. Of the other 2, only 1 is being used for its purpose. So EVERYTHING else has been, "for the hell of it!". FC

M1 Carbine. Serves purposes well when I have a spray and pray flashback. It's death on beer cans, annoys liberals and doesn't mind sitting in the vault for months on end while its peers get out for regular exercise. And a 1894 Marlin with close to a century in the rear view.......
I am..........disturbed.

Some kind of falling-block single shot, no doubt about it. If your eyes are up to it, get one with irons, but there are good options for vintage-style scopes too.
The more I play with the ones I have, the better I like them. No magazines to stuff or cause cartridge-length problems, just plunk one in and shoot. If you go rimfire, you don't even have to pick up the brass. Small centerfire rounds are fun too: .22 Hornet, .32/20, .357, .44s etc. New Winchester Low Walls and decent Eyetalians go for about $1109-$1200. If you're feeling prosperous, there are a couple of small domestic outfits that make nice ones too, at a price of course.
What fresh Hell is this?

Dang Ingwe, you'll poke your eye out with that scope.. Dont know how many times I have to tell you guys...I mount scopes far back for two reasons... 1) I have thick coke bottle bottom glasses, which screw up eye relief...and... 2) JeffO told me to do it that way, and I always listen to him....

No practical reason to own one but probably a lightweight, takedown BLR in 358 Win.
Edit: alternately, I believe it was Sauer who made an elegant, "civilian-styled" semi-auto .223 of high quality decades back. A bit heavy and pricey but as much art as machine -- I could almost justify one of those.

I've got a few./ For some reason they're all big-bores.
A Winchester 1895 in 405 Winchester A Winchester 1886 in 45-90 A double rifle in something 40 caliber or bigger A Winchester 9410 takedown And the most likely next one to happen, a Remington Sendero re-bored to 9.3x62mm

My CZ 527 .223 light varmint is my third in that caliber. Got few PDs left, so I really didn't need it.JACK I have a 527 in 7.62X39. The carbine. I absolutely love that little rifle. Very inexpensive to shoot, low recoil, and very accurate. CZ knows what they're about.

Winchester 1892 "Saddle Ring Carbine" with a large lever loop chambered in .44-40. Just so I can flip cock it and say, "Fill your hand you son of a bitch!"

I always kinda wanted one of the 94 Winchester Muskets that they made for the NRA's 100th anniversary in 1971. One of these days, I'll run up on one.
I kick myself every once in awhile for not buying a Ruger 1A , chambered for 303 British, that Muledeer had in the Classifieds some years back. The price was definitely right on that one.

My latest "just for the hell of it" rifle is a Rem 700 classic in 300 Savage. Found one new in the box, so promptly put a VXII 2-7 on it and got it to the range before it was ruined for life.
No, it won't do anything better than my .308s will. So what. Shoots great, very accurate, not a lot of recoil, looks good. Have carried it a few days this deer season, won't replace my Kimber Montana, but will get used now and then.

I'd remembered the ad from a while back and had previously sent a PM about the rifle. Dug it up and saw it was still listed after I posted above. BAM! Now I'm in the process of having my "Just for the Hell of It Rifle"!

What's not to like about a Mod 98 Mauser, with a custom Atkinson barrel in 6.5X55

For me, it would be this Remington 760 in .35 Remington that I just recently picked up, been looking for a pristine one for years, and I don't think this one has ever been fired. 1979 vintage according to Remington. I have a 760 carbine in 30-06 that can do everything this one can do, and probably even better, but a 760 in .35 Remington is simply the epitome of coolness as far as I am concerned. The other one I'd buy just for the hell of it if I could find one in pristine condition would be a Remington 600 with the laminated stock and ventilated rib in 350 Remington Magnum, even though I don't have any kind of need for it.

16Bore; Good evening to you sir, I hope all is well in your world. Thanks for the interesting thread and the reading it's provided. Quite an eclectic bunch of responses for sure. For me personally, lately I've been intrigued by the idea of having a 92 clone in .357/.38SPL with a trapper length barrel - maybe a Chiappa since they don't have any goofy extra safeties tacked on. I need one like a third nostril, but seem to be trolling the Canuck sites looking for one nightly somehow.... We'll see if I can find one on this side of the medicine line or not before this ague drifts away. All the best to you and yours as we head into winter 16Bore. Dwayne

No real reason, just kinda cool to have sorta thing.
.....................Well if given the choice amongst many possibilities, I just might go with a 6.5/300 Wby Ultralite MK5......Long range? Yep......Light? Good enough.....For mountains? Absolutely.....Price? Not cheap........Cool? Yup and quite the conversation piece as well......The ballistic king of the 6.5 family.

Well you asked....
I'd love to have a 416 Rem Mag in either a M 70 or 700. Obviously I don't need one but I've been intrigued with the round since it was introduced. I just want to PLAY with it and say, " I have a 416 RM".
I'm in a rather small fraternity of 8 mm Rem Mag owners--"that like it". I guess that'll have to do.

What's not to like about a Mod 98 Mauser, with a custom Atkinson barrel in 6.5X55 So Very Nice !! I don't like the top rotating safety tab. I have a 98 custom 284 Win with Timney trigger - same top rotating. Not my favorite option. I have killed 2 deer with it this season SO FAR. Jerry

How about a full on custom Ruger No.1 in 256 Newton!
Spent way, WAY too much money on it, and doesn't do anything that a dozen other No. 1's won't do, but it sure has the "cool" factor nailed!

As above, most of mine are just for the hell of it. Most recently a RH Ruger African chambered in .275 Rigby because I have never owned a 7x57. A few months before that, a LH Win M70 chambered .375H&H just because the "price was right". Before that... Anyone of my .243's or .270's would be totally sufficient for everything I hunt.

I have a Cooper custom classic in .30-06 with several options, like full-length bedding, red pad, inletted sling eyelets, jeweled bolt, etc. Since I already have 6 other .30-06 rifles, the Cooper is definitely "just for the hell of it". It'll probably never go hunting, but it's nice to fondle and a fun range toy. It wears a Leupold 6x42mm in Talley steel mounts. Bob

Miroku 92 in .357
Miroku 1886 Extra Light weight, in .33 Win
Remington Mtn Rifle, 6.5 Creedmoor w/22" bbl
...Actually Sycamore, you are sort of right....

It's nothing special but I'd like a nice wood stock Remington model 7 in 7mm-08. I could buy one... But don't "need" it so I haven't. Maybe someday.

Winchester Model 70 Featherweight chambered in 270 Winchester. Has to be a Classic, I want the old trigger and CRF. I had a one once or twice and ready to buy another! This reminded me that I have 2 Pre'64 Fwts in 270.....just for the hell of it...:-)

I have all of the rifles I will ever likely "need" but one I am missing and a hole I would like to fill is a marlin 30-30. I want to scope it and it would be shot and used so I don't need anything fancy. I just want a lever 30-30 to plink with. I bought an old marlin 35 Rem and a nice winchester 94 30-30 for $100 each but never warmed up to the top eject winchester so it went down the road. I would also like to have a Henry lever action 22 to add to the collection as well. There is something that is just cool about a lever action gun that makes them fun.

It seems most of my rifles are "just for the hell of it" since the first deer rifle Dad gave me, an early production M70 Featherweight Classic in 270 Win. Since then they're all fun, but most are just for the hell of it.
If we're talking something I'd really love but don't need...I'd take a long action M70 Stainless Featherweight Classic to a gunsmith I know, have him (Larry) rebarrel it with a Krieger in a light contour chamber it in 270 Win and then bed it into McMillan Compact Edge or Brown Pound'r. I could hunt the rest of my life with those two 270s and never feel like I needed another rifle.

My next "just for the hell of it" rifle is going to be a .358 Norma. I have a hard time imagining a scenario where I would shoot something with it that I wouldn't shoot with my .300 win mag or .35 Whelen but I still want one. Been acquiring headstamped brass for a while, have a set of dies, piles of .358 bullets, a blueprinted remington action ready to be opened up, and several suitable stocks on hand. I just need to order the barrel and get something put together before I see something else shiny...like a .376 Steyr.

My "Just for the hell of it" gun would have to be a Winchester 1895 in 405 or 30-06. Not sure what I would do with it other than hang it on the wall and shoot it a couple times a year but man are they cool.

A Browning repro 71 chambered in .375/.348. It's been done more than once, but I thought it would be a fun rifle to take to Alaska.
A Winchester 94 in .38-55 with a pistol grip, shotgun butt and a 24" barrel with a full length magazine tube. I saw a picture of one in the Winchester 94 book and fell in love.
A couple of Marlin levers in .45 Colt and .357 with 22" barrels, button magazines, shotgun butt and pistol grip. I know many would want shorter barrels, but I love 22 to 24" barrels on rifles.

I don’t really need anything, but just for the heck of it I ‘d go for a real light rifle in 221Fireball, with a 20 inch barrel. Something like an old Ruger M77 Ultralight would be good, or a Sako superlight. Probably i’d want it blued, with a pretty wood stock.

Rigby Highland Stalker Rifle (or a look alike). Probably be too darn scared to take it out hunting, but really like the way they look. Yes, in 275 Rigby no less

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Thank you. Prolly ain't gonna suck. Thanks for the nudge ladies.

I guess any gun still in the locker when I go hunting was bought just for the hell of it...but so far, that tag must go to the 30-06 ruger hawkeye std, my only wood stocked rifle, that's never gone into the woods hunting...love the way it looks.

I'm thinking maybe just for the hell of it, I should pick up a nice #2 1/2 contour 24" barrel in 8x57 and build that 98 action I've got in the safe. Save my pennies and have it Robar finished and drop it into the Fajen wlanut stock next to the safe...

JM stamped Marlin 1894 in 357 mag.
Must be just fun to shoot and play with, from tin cans, squirrel hunting to 50-75 yard deer. Put a 2.5x scope on it, and start shooting.
Maybe a Winchester /Miroku 1894 in 38-55; short rifle configuration

I've bought many rifles "just for the hell of it," the most recent being a Swiss K31 7.5x55. I'll shoot it for awhile and likely move it on down the line to make room for another rifle I'll buy "just for the hell of it."

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I have used that JFTHOI line pretty frequently but at the moment I still want;
Marlin 30 TK .30-30,
Winchester 1886 Superlight in .33 Win
Ruger Stainless Gunsite Scout No 8622 18" barrel with the stock changed to the LW version. 16" is too short for a .308 imho

A few of the last firearm purchases, that were "just for the hell of it" are still here - one 20+ years after the purchase. "The Warden" decided she liked the way they feel - and appropriated them! Gotta love a woman who appreciates good guns!

I've got a hankering for a 375 H&H. It would have to be walnut/blue of course, and CRF. First choice would be a Pre 64 Model 70, but a Mauser or high quality Mauser clone would do. I have no need whatsoever for one and probably won't ever hunt anything that would necessitate a rifle that large, but it would be nice to dream about using it on a hunt in Alaska or Africa.

I would like to have another Marlin 336RC "Marauder" in 35 Rem. I have owned two in my life and sold both during hard times. I would like to come across another one some day. I don't really need one as I have 30-30s and 44 Mag rifles that fill the niche, but want one just for the hell of it.

I inherited a pre-64 featherweight 30-06. Every rifle I've bought since that one has been for the hell of it...Most have been Model 70s of some sort.

I was thinking about building a lightweight .280 AI, stainless, synthetic, to hunt everything, everywhere. When I got it back from the gunsmith, it was a .404 Jeffery on an Interams action, blued with an H-S Precision stock. Still don't know how that happened.
