Was warm and dry until Friday. I had a bull tag and managed this bull on Wednesday morning. Only elk we saw in 4 days. 249 yards bang flop. A little down hill spine area going in top of lung going out. Hide trapped it. Tikka 300 short mag. 66 grains 4831 pushing 180 grain Nosler Partition.
Sounds like a great hunt. Our family was up in there 4th season as well. 7 hunters, 6 elk. Everyone had a shot at an elk. We went with Tel Gates and River's Bend Outfitting. We cannot recommend them and their guys enough. It was an amazing hunt we will be talking about for the rest of our lives. I'm sure all the women at the Thanksgiving table got tired of hearing about it. Here's the elk I shot. Nothing too special, Remington 700 30-06 shooting a single Remington Core-Lokt.
Sorry for the confusion, I didn't mean the elk or hunt wasn't special. In fact they were quite the opposite. The rifle and shot were not very special. But that plain jane 30-06 has killed 5 elk that I know of. I totally agree every day in the woods is special, and the day it no longer is for me watch out in craigslist and the classifieds. We were in their main camp.
And here are some photos of why the hunt would be special even if we didn't see an elk.
Can't believe partitions are still killin' animals. Good job - it looks like fun was had . . . .
Ain't that the truth. I started with hot cor and partitions 45 years ago. Now,I feel guilty if I load anything that doesn't have a plastic tip. Some of my best groups are still turned in with old school bullets.

Crazy weather 4th season west of Salida. Very warm and windy. Then 24 hours of rain...at 9200 ft ele!!! Then one great cold, still, snowy day. We saw a few elk, but did not get one. We all had a great time none the less.
