Hi fellas,
I’m curious how you scope your .222. I have a nice old Sako L461 Vixen with a good 3-12 scope on it which I think is good magnification for the great .222

6 x on my Sako. Plenty of magnification for a .222.

The L461 action begs for a 4x compact leupold...

I only use mine for gophers and prairie dogs.. Had a good 10x on it, but went to an older Leupold 6.5-20.. This is pretty specialized for this caliber.. I think what you have would be excellent for the .222 and normal use.. Have another .222 Sako with a 2-7 Leu... But it is my turkey rifle..

Not a .222 unfortunately, but a .221 Fireball, so close enough. Mine wears a Leupold 4.5-14x40 AO. They tell me that heat mirage gets lots worse over 10x, so I didn't want to go too high. We don't have much to shoot lots of times at like you guys out where the prairie dogs live and the only thing that I can figure was that our Midwest shooters were better than the East Coast shooters and we all but wiped out the ground hogs here years ago. That the 4.5x low power is low enough for an occasional coyote hunt.
My other auto is a .45

I had a Weaver K-6 on my last .222. Was plenty deadly on woodchucks and crows out to 250 - 275 yards.

My walking-around ground squirrel rifle in .221 Rem wears a Leupold 3.5-10.
The max range for my squirrel shooting is about 250 to 275 yards, so this works well. I appreciate not having more bulk or weight on this rifle that is carried a lot (Rem M-700).

Mine has had a VXIII 4.5-14 on it, but suddenly and mysteriously started shooting 2" groups. So a SS 10x is getting switched on shortly.
I've seen more well-shot game lost with TSXs than any other premium bullet.

Depends on what your primary use is for the 222. The 3x12 most likely will cover all needs. My old 700 wears a 20x with fine crosshairs for punching hole in paper. My Model 7 wears a 2.5x10 Elite 4000 for all around use.

Konmari: Thusly on my 222's:
#1: Remington 700 Classic = Weaver V-16 (4x16 variable) #2: Remington 700 Classic = Lyman 10 power #3: Remington 40XB-BR = Leupold 24 power #4: Remington 700 Varmint Special = Redfield 6x18 variable #5: Sako L46 Varmint = Leupold 8 power (Westerner) #6: Remington 722 = Lyman 10 power #7: Sako L46 Custom = Unertl BV-20
In short I recommend lost of scope power to take advantage of the inherent accuracy of the 222 Remington cartridge. Long live the 222 Remington! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

If you have just one gun, scopes like a 2-12, 2,5-10, 3-12, 3-15, even a 4-16 make a lot of sense. I have the luck of owning a few 222's and can pretty much specialize my set ups. I hunt coyotes and with the limited power of the 222 beyond 200 yards your on the downside. Coyotes are a fairly large target and calling them can be a close in affair, I find that having a huge FOV far more advantages than "x's" , a 200 yard shot is a chip shot on them with a 1-4, with most of the shots I take never getting off 1x.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

My heavy barrel single shot L461 wears a Leupold VX-2 6-18 x 40 with low knobs and is upgraded with the LR Duplex reticle. Works great on California ground squirrels out to 350 yds.

At present I only have two 222's ,A custom built from a 40x that I use as a varmint gun and it has a Leupold VX3 6.5x20 on it. The other is a CZ527 that wears a Leupold VX3i 4.5x14 that I use for calling coyotes, thinking of swapping it out for a 2.5x8 the 4.5x on the bottom side is a bit much for close calling

6 - 8x for my 222 Remington's. All set up for woodchuck hunting. It's plenty of magnification to take head shots out to 300 yards. It's low enough magnification to maintain the target in the scope to "spot the shot' whether you hit or miss.
It's not just magnification, but resolution.
222 Rem rifles I've owned:
Savage 112JRS single shot Rem 788 S&W 1500 Rem 700 Varmint Sake A1 heavy barrel
Scopes used on them:
Leupold 6x36 Burris Signature 6x42 (GREAT scope) Lyman 8x AO. All-American with 1 MOA dot (Great scope and love the 1 moa dot) Leupold 8x AO
I used a steel-tubed Weaver T-10x AO. Worked ok on heavier rifles, but was borderline for spotting to shot through the scope.
My brother has a Bausch & Lomb 6x on his Winchester model 70a (late 1970's vintage) sporter. It is a fantastic rifle, shoots 3/4 moa, and a 6x scope is perfect on that rifle.

I have an OLD benchrest 222 on a Rem 700 in an AICS as my tactical trainer with a Sightron SIII 8-32x56. CHEAP, fun, and damn accurate practice rig.

.221 Fireball walking rifle has a Hakko 1.5-5 with a circle and crosshair, with a naturally lit up reticle in multiple colors. Rem 660 222 has a leupold 10x Anschutz 153 Minox 3-9

That's exactly my use for my 222, a Valmet 12/222 O/U. I have a good Denver Redfield Widefield 1 3/4-5 duplex on it. IF 5x isn't enough power, then what I'm shooting is too far out, and it's definitely not skwills & ratz. The low power settings and 12gauge make this a great 'yote gun.

A Leupold 2.5-8x36 would seem to have the right Feng Shui for that rifle.

I have an M8 6x42 Leupold with a fine duplex reticle that I've used to demonstrate what can be done at 300 yards with "only 6x" that should sit well on top of a 222. I'll have to get a 222 and find out.

Not a 222, but my 223 nice-day gopher sporter wears a Leupold 8X36. It's hard to find these days, but I think it's about perfect.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

SS 10x MQ on my boy's 222. Just mounted it to replace a VXIII 4.5-14 that seems to be acting flakey... again.

3x9's on both of mine. Same on the Handi Rifle which is a 223. A 3x12 should work just fine.

Of all the rifles I own my SAKO 222 is the only one I have that has a high-magnification scope on it. A 4X-12X Redfield of 1972 Vintage. It gets used on Prairie Dogs a lot, and at 12X I can hit them waaaay out there. I used it as my main rifle for hide hunting for several years and I killed more coyotes and fixes with it that I could count. But I ran the scope down to 4X or sometime 5X for hide hunting.
Now days I have gone to an accurate AR-15 16" carbine as my coyote gun and I use a Weaver K4 on it.
