I have one on my combination rifle/shotgun that I use for coyote hunting and it works great. There is enough FOV that I can use it for flying birds on the way back from a stand and enough X's to take shots on coyotes to 300+ yards.

I don't hunt nights but early and late, if there is enough light to spot a coyote coming to the call with my eyes I can see him in the scope.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I have one on my turkey shotgun, the NWTF edition in a tan finish. I like it for that purpose.

Or... I guess that's the VX-1.

I bought one a few months ago to put on a Ruger 1/303Brit. It's a nice match on the short rifle and seems to have very adequate optics and adjusts (boxes) very well. I have had no problems getting sub 1 inch groups with this combination when at 4X (my eyes tell me it is actually a bit less than 4X but I could be wrong). I have been shooting cast gas checked or paper patched soft cast bullets exclusively and am very happy with the scope rifle combination.

From what little I know, you may be right. I think the bottom isn't exactly 1X either. To me, it seems to magnify a bit.

Many scopes magnify at an approximate factor of three -- as in a 3-9X scope. A 2-7X scope isn't exactly 2-7X; it's prolly closer to 2.3-6.9X, or 2.25-6.75X. The manufacturers just round off the numbers. I've seen some manufacturers, in their specs, give the unrounded numbers.

A 1-4X is prolly something like 1.25-3.75X -- though I'm willing to be corrected.

Steve.

The actual magnification specs given for this scope in the 2012 Leupold catalog are 1.4X and 4X.

I was looking up the same thing as you were posting. A quick visit to the Loopy website, in the specs of the various scopes, shows this:
VX-2 1-4x20mm........Actual Magnification........4.0 (1.4)
VX-2 2-7x33mm........Actual Magnification........6.7 (2.4)
VX-2 3-9x40mm........Actual Magnification........8.8 (3.2)
VX-2 4-12x40mm.......Actual Magnification........11.8 (4.3)

All of these are closer to a factor of 2.75X than they are to 3X.

So the 1-4x, according to Loopy, is exactly 4X. Even if it's not exactly 4x, if anyone eyes can tell the difference between 4.0 and something fractionally less, as in 3.9, his eyes are better than mine.

Steve.

Sure wish Leupold would complete their updating of their website.
The new VX-2 Ultralights are not in there yet nor several other models listed in their printed catalog.

I have one on my Marlin 336 and like it. No real issues in low light.

I've had one on a Marlin Mod. 30-AS in 30-30 for about 10 years now. I don't think I could ask for a better scope for a woods gun.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never thought that the Leupold 1-4x20 or 1.5-5x20 were as bright, transferred light(?), as well as the comperable series 2-7x28, 2-7x33, or 3-9x33.

I have a couple Vari-X III 1.5-5x20s mounted on brush guns, a Ruger 44 International and a Ruger 77 RSI in 308, but I don't think that I've carried either rifle afield for at least a decade.

I've used several 1-4X and they work well, however an alternative for short-range work would be the new Leupold 1-4x SG scope and they have the HD reticle.

Just a thought. wink

I just put a 1-4 VX-II on my 30-30 and it is a very bright scope. Not a lot of low light experience yet but I was shooting it the other evening at dusk and I could still see fine. I will tell you at the lowest setting you can see your toes in the FOV. At top it is plenty for shooting groups at 100yds and since the VX-2 is suppose to be even better I would imagine it is a heck of a scope.

I have a Leupold 1-4x20 shotgun scope with the heavy duplex reticle on my Browning Safari 375 H&H. It is an excellent combination. I'm sure it isn't ideal for precision but I can still manage 1" groups at 100 yards. More to its intended purpose when I was bear hunting this spring and I still hunted up to a bear at 20 yards in the brush it didn't make it far when it tried to run. The rifle came up and at 1x with the heavy duplex the shooting was easy.

I have one that's been used on an AR-15 and a CZ 550 .375 H&H. It has worked well for me.
