1st one is too small. It could probably only do a 4 ft brush hog. A year ago,I looked a long time for used and that $3000 price was about bottom for anything running.I wouldn't pass on the 3400 if you can go see it and try it out. Wouldn't do it if not. Also you have a 15.5% buyers premium for anything under $10K. ($450), plus shipping , plus internet premium

You are probably looking at $8K to get some thing decent at a minimum

A good tractor of any age, or size, is not cheap now days. Repairs are higher still. Buy as good condition as you can find. The tractor you want will come up right after you buy one.

When we moved up here I needed a tractor for brush hogging, habitat improvement, snowblowing, smaller rototiller or disc, small wagon, etc etc. About 30-40 HP, 4WD. I looked HARD for six months for the right, pre-owned unit. Ran all over No Michigan looking for a good used one 'Bota, JD or NH. All the nice ones were asking "near new" prices. So I took advantage of financing and bot a new L3010 Kubota. I could sell it today for what I paid 20years ago.

Thanks guy's. My cheapness is getting in the way of my common sense. Need to have someone shove the cheapness out of the way every once in a while.

It was one you used for an hour and worked on for two hours. I was out changing a starter in -5 degree F weather . Right then I decied the heck with this. I went and bought a new Kubota 2501.Sold the Ford for $3000.Now some one else is working on it

I decided that the sweet spot is the Kubota 2650.

That sounds like a solid plan. My 'bota 3010 I bot in new in1999, has only ~ 800 hrs but not a minutes worth of trouble so far.

My thoughts, tires are about shot. They have some life but not much. Bucket is not a quick attach. No rear remotes. It looks to be hydrostatic drive and by the looks of it, I bet the only time it had its oil changed was when it leaked out. Hydrostatic hyd pumps will most likely be vane pumps. Vanes wear due to contaminated oil. When vanes wear they bypass oil and create heat. When the oil gets hot it loses viscosity and the pump stops pushing oil which means you stop going or your implements stop working. This will be pricey if you do the work yourself. A shuttle shift is a better choice in my opinion and a gear tranny is second place. You can easily check a clutch for wear. Hydros not so easy and they are easy to disguise in cold weather or with doctored hyd oil. I know I will get flamed for throwing the hydro under the bus but I look at these things from a mechanical and reliability point of view. Good used tractors are out there. You just have to be patient. I looked for better than a year within 4 hrs of Home and found a one owner with 300hrs not 3 miles from my house. I am not a brand whore. I decided what I wanted in a tractor then went to looking for the mfg who’s machine fit my needs/wants. Use searchtempest.com. It takes craigslist ads and puts them all together in a searchable format depending on the distance radius you care to travel.
