I purchased this rifle today at a local estate auction. It’s very clean but has rubber pad with correct LOP. This is very unfortunate because I really like the inletted factory steel butt plate these rifles came with. Which pad can I put on this Gun to make the best of the situation? I’m thinking of a red rubber Winchester Repro pad?? What are your suggestions?

The repro red rubber Winchester pad would be a vast improvement over that ventilated monstrosity.

Can I find one of the proper thickness so that I can maintain proper LOP?

There is only one company on the planet currently making repro Winchester pads (Galazan) and as with the origionals , the solid pads come in one thickness- .95"

What is the length from the wood line at the butt to the trigger?

Winchester leverguns had shorter factory LOPs than most people think- usually 13" to 13.25"

From trigger to wood line is 12-1/4"
This pad is 3/4"

So I suppose I can get this done with a repro .95" pad and possibly NO or a very thin black spacer?

Try flea bay for an original butt stock. Sometimes they come up for sale. And yes, that's a beautiful carbine despite the pad .

Ok, my next question is, who do I get to install this new pad? I realize that this is not rocket science, but I have seen so many botched pad jobs I don't want to trust this to just anyone. Is there someone who has an excellent reputation that I can know will get this right?

I'd go with a red Pachmayr decelerator pad, size medium. I have had both those and the Galazan pads and prefer the Decelerator for actual use.

There is a standard butt stock in flea bay for 150 uncut. Would need checkering and sling attachment

The Repro pads cost a bit more than a Pachmayr about $50 shipped. Have one installed RIGHT and then leave it be, IMHO.

As fars as recoil goes- its a 30-30- not a .375 H&H.. i think the repro pad will work just dandy.

As to installation- labor alone for a proper job is $60 to $75 grind and fit the pad.. I would order the pad from Brownells and then take the buttstock off the gun and send it and the pad to Ahlmans in Minnesota. Have them install it.

Wow, that is nice! Too bad about the pad, but it's still a beauty. I'd go with the repro pad and start looking for a nice Lyman 66A or 56A, depending on year of manufacture. A Williams won't look right on that old girl!

Factory LOP is more like 13-5/8" - 13-3/4". It's probably going to need a spacer with a 1" pad.

Are you getting those "factory" LOP measurements from unaltered origional m64 rifles you have on hand ?

My guess is that the PO had long arms & needed the extra length of stock, as I've done the same to any number of rifles, that "kick" just as little as the .30-30 does.

Beautiful rifle, I agree with the reproduction Winchester pad recommendation, I've used them and the firearm looks "right" with one on it.

A dang good catch! When a kid, when someone mentioned "deer rifle" the Model 64 was the image that popped into my head! Guess I looked at too many old ads in the Shooter's Bibles!
