So I have an interesting something going on here.

I bought a rifle years ago that Loggahs brother put together with PE wood on a 99F rifle. Buttstock assembly code #2452. No number on the forearm, forearm has raised rear sight boss cutout. Did any of the PE's have a raised rear sight boss? Maybe a custom matching forearm had to be made to fit the 99F barrel?

I also have a PE in .308 (with no rear sight boss, tapered barrel) with forearm assembly code #2452 that matches the above rifles buttstock assembly code. The buttstock on this 308 PE has been shortened so no # is present.

So I have #2452 buttstock on one rifle from back east and #2452 forearm on another rifle from Texas. Is it possible that I have re-united two halves of a set or were assembly numbers not sets??? Maybe the "D" on one is what differentiates them?

My 243 PE has the raised rear sight boss. serial # 1142XXX. The 284's of course didn't have the raised sight boss. I thought the 308's had the boss. Seems like I've seen a few that did have it. Assembly codes that I've seen had a combination of letters and numbers but that sure looks like a set. David

The Victor get's to write the history! I'd say your finding these separate-same-numbered stocks is a modern major Savage victory. You get to cal the history whatever You want Roy!

David, this 308 is date code X, 1970, and has the tapered barrel w/o sight boss.

You guys won't believe this, I just went out and checked the serial number on the 308 PE. It ends with 2452.

Holy Cow, I think I just won the Savage lottery and achieved the un-achievable. Climbed the unclimbable! Soaring with eagles!

I looked at the shortened one that came off the 99PE 308 and inside the cheeks on both sides written in pencil is the same #, 2452. Do you suppose the factory would have written that in there?Did someone special order it with a shortened buttstock maybe? That might account for the original buttstock making it to the open market and ending up on the 99F. ????

A thick book could be written on the anomalies in the 99's. I've seen a really late DL with the straight tapered barrel and now a PE!
Getting the matching wood back together is a great story on its own. David

The matching numbers and quality of wood is close enough for me. What are the odds?

The F is an absolutely spotless post mil rifle (in 300), probably why the "Dick" put such nice wood on it, so anything short of PE wood is a downgrade. With that said, I had the correct wood for that model and age here, so it got fitted with F wood. If I was thataway inclined, the rifle is definitely worthy of custom wood, but I probably won't. here it is before and after the swap. Bottom rifle in photo-

It's not PE wood, but for what it is it's nice wood and at least is correct for the rifle.

That's a 99CE in 300 Salvage. These two were part of a batch purchased in Texas.

I have the Savage shipping box and the original gun box, as well as the wood display case for it.

To be honest, this one doesn't do much for me. I like the PE better. You know, they aren't really "exquisite", they're just production rifles.

Don, you gotta find out what you can for me about this wood. How did your brother get ahold of it? I'd love to know if he bought the wood as a set from the factory or how did he get the two pieces, being mismatched and all? I'm really curious how buttstock 2452 came off a PE rifle and ended up being sold off. Any chance Dick knows more of the story?

And no, he's not getting the rifle back, I need the buttstock!!!! grin
