Has anyone used the 100 grain Nosler E-tips in an older 250/3000 with a 1-14 twist? I've used 100 grain Sierra's before and my rifle seemed to stabilize them just fine. I just want a more premium bullet for big game so I want to try the E-tip.

I don't think you'll enjoy that exercise.

Have you measured your rifle twist? Savage 99,s twist in 250 vary.

Best hope would be to take a 100gr Nosler Partition and file the lead tip off it may shoot if you wanted a tougher 250 Savage bullet. (One forum member told me that trick, thanks)

I tried the 117 Gr Round Nose and it did not work in a 1-14 twist 250 Savage.

Bullet has to be short in length to shoot well in a 1-14 twist .

Speer 100 gr is one of the shorter 257 100 gr bullets.

E-Tip will likely do okay if you are happy with 7"-8" groups at 100 yds.

Cutting tip off might shorten it enough to shoot well, never had any to try. As mentioned, it did work okay for me with 100gr Partitions to cut the tip off on a couple of 1-14" 250-3000's. Your experience may vary since guns are different.

I still shoot the 87gr Speer Hot Core, being its the most accurate. Just have to put the bullet where it belongs. If I'm ever after a real trophy, I'll probably go to a Partition.

My rifle is indeed a 1-14 twist. I thought that the boat tail design might help with stabilizing the bullet in the 1-14 twist, but I'd imagine I'll be going back to the Sierra 1620 100 grain Prohunter bullets. I've loaded up a dozen of the E-tips for S&G's since I bought a box. I'll see how they do. Thanks for the info all.

Anyone have the OAL of the Speer 1405 100 grain bullet?

The Sierra 1620 100 grain is .958

I was curious if the Speer bullet is shorter.

Good luck on your quest. Me living in communist Calif, I'm going to have to find an all copper bullet for my 1899 with 1-14 twist.

Measured 1 100 Gr Speer .940 " Barnes 85 X old style measured .942", as I recall the Barnes shot so so in my 24" 99 EG 250 Savage that twist measured about 1 -13.5.


The 85 GR Barnes X will not shoot in my other 2 99 EG 1-14 twist.


Best guess is bullet would have to be at or under .940" length to have any hope of shooting in a 1-14 true twist rate.

from what I've read, some of the pre-60 250-3000 savages will shoot the 100 grain Remington Cor-Lokt bullet ok, some won't. Had a friend pull and measure the lenght of one - 0.928", so that might be a length to reference as a go/no go as a quick comparison for other bullets.

I managed to buy several boxes of those for my M1920 and M250-3000 back when Barnes was still shipping up to Canada.
