The new Tikka T3x SS lite .300 I bought a couple weeks ago from Whittaker's for $510 weighs 7 lbs. on the nose with a Leupold VX-2 3-9x and Talley mounts and it shoots sub 1" with several factory loads I've tried.

Funny! Ive been running 7lb or less .300 Win bolt action rifles for years and i have never had a scope problem out of any of My Leupold scopes. I dont understand the recoil fear so many have with a .300 Win, i suspect a lot of it comes from guys that have never even shot a .300 Win as i can tell very little difference in the recoil of a .300 Win vs a 30-06......Hb

Well...there is a huge difference in recoil between the two. But I don’t think you’d have a problem with a quality scope.

Yeah, I guess felt recoil is a relative thing, some are far more recoil sensitive than others, I know a guy that has a hard time with recoil, hell he cant even shoot a .308 Win without pissin his pants....Lol.....Hb

Advertising for sub/sub/ what you want in a gun? Now that is truely. funny. in several respects.

Bought a 300WM Colt Light Rifle some years ago, that is very accurate with 180 gr Partitions under 76 grains of RL22. Had Melvin Forbes add his various upgrades, and ended up with a rifle that fits Elkivories specifications.
I added a 6x Leupold, with the LR reticle.
I am pretty happy with the results.
It is a delight to carry, not just weight, but balance and "feel in the hand". Mr Forbes stock delivered some magic here.
I would argue that recoil is entirely manageable with this package. My 14 and 18 year old grandsons shoot it from time to time. Technique, stock design, recoil pad, and your (subjective) attitude contribute the complexities of recoil.
With a little patience, another CLR could be sourced, upgraded by Forbes, and decently scoped, with a $2,000 budget.
The rifle doesn't need a thing.
HOWEVER, I am contemplating testing out the 200 gr Partitions in it. Then, of course, there is RL26 and ETips bullets to consider. I have also been thinking about sending the scope back to Leupold for a change to the German post reticle. Can't seem to shake this loony thing.

I'd pass on the WM and go 30-06 Kimber Montana, LW's, and a M8 6X42 for a 6lb. 8oz package of death.

Recoil does seem to be a funny thing. My .300 WM is a Ruger Zytel "Boat Paddle" stock. Everyone looks at it like it will rip my shoulder off when I touch it. I find it very manageable shooting 180s over a stiff load of RL22. At the same time, my buddy has a winchester 670 in .300 that absolutely abuses me with comparable loads...I actually had a 670 in .30-06 that was equally unpleasant. Must just be a fit issue.

IF you are looking to go this route, I have a 30-06 Montana that shoots great but the prior owner monkeyed with a little bit. Its a great hunting gun, but not something you want to post pics on the forum of (bad bubba gunsmithing). I would make you a good deal on it....

Hell I've got some FX3 6x42 scopes I could sell you for it as well =]

Why not find an older M70 winlite xtr with the micky stock. Seen them as low as $550 on GB. Might be a skoosh over 7, but you could chop the barrel and add an aluminum floorplate and synthetic mag follower and get there.

Again just a personal preference, but Wby Vanguard Wilderness has fluted barrel and the magnums carry 26" barrels in 257 Wby, 6.5-300 Wby, 300 Win Mag and 300 Wby. Weight is 6-3/4 lbs, retail around $750-$800. Solid machine for field use and is Wby's offering as a light weight in Vanguard over the well sought after Mark V Ultralight costing $1,000 more than the Vanguard profile.
