What scope recommendations do folks here have for the Marlin .45-70 GBL? I'm thinking mainly of the power, more than brand, but brand recommendations are OK, too.
I think I have a Nikon Monarch 3-9 around here somewhere? Not sure that would be a good scope for this gun. Also wondering about mounts.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks. Steve.

Full functionality with a Leupold Scout Scope on XS rail with Weaver rings. No hammer spurs needed. One could operate all aspects of your rifle while wearing boxing gloves.

All but one of my lever guns currently wear 2-7x33 Leupolds. The other has 2-7x36 Kahles.
In the past I have also used a 1.75-6x32 Leupold and a Weaver Classic Shotgun 1.5-5x32 with Diamond Plex.
Prefer the 32-36" objective over the straight tubes for lower light situations.

My 1895 has a Leupold 1-4X heavy crosshair "slug gun" scope. It also has a Weaver Pivot scope mount, a Trijicon tritium dot front bead with the rear buckhorn sight milled to resemble an express sight. It's not very good for squirrels but it works well on whitetails and black bear.

I prefer low power, wide field of view type scopes for the 45-70.
Along the lines of the 1-4X20 VX-2, 1.5-5 VX-3i, or FX-2.5X20 UL. I've used these with complete satisfaction on my Guide gun. Observations (I won't call them complaints) are that the 1-4 or 1.5-5 may have a little less eye relief than the 2.5X20, but the 2.5X eyebox is more critical. But, it has enough eye relief for a shoulder-fired 20MM......
6 of 1, half a dozen of another, and I find myself getting away from the real heavy recoiling loads, so I'm leaning more towards FOV.
Bobnob17, that is an underappreciated scope you have, and the 2-7 power offers a lot for hunting close cover. I use a 2-7X33 VX-2 CDL on a handly little .308 and find it very versatile, more so than the 1-4s.

I've seriously been thinking about a reflex sight like a burris fastfire on a rail on one of the 1895 bls

M8 3x with Post and Duplex is working well for me. A little more forgiving eye box than the 2.5x20 in my opinion with the tradeoff being it is a bit larger.

I've seriously been thinking about a reflex sight like a burris fastfire on a rail on one of the 1895 bls I've done that. It's a deadly sight if things are going to be moving. A little less precision for fast target acquisition.

I prefer a low profile scope over a fullsize 40mm + objective. I have gone with Nikon's MONARCH 3 2-8x32 BDC reticle on my Browning .308 Lever Action rifle. More for your rifle the BDC would come in extremely handy by using Spot On to dial in the ballistic's with scope and rifle. I love hunting with big bores like the 45-70. Fortunately in TX we can hunt hogs and predator's year round so the rifle doesn't just sit in the safe. In case you have found a mount for your rifle check ouut the below link. https://www.marlinfirearms.com/scope-base-chart

I have a leupold 2.5x mounted on mu guide gun, and a leupold 2x7 on my GBL, like both scopes because they are small and keep the rifle handy .

I've got an M8 2.5 on my #1 (I know, not a Marlin), but I have thought for a while, one of those SWFA 1-4 AR scopes might be REALLY cool on a .45-70. Mil turrets and reticle, illuminated. Looks handy close in, at low light, and dialing a 400 grainer in from way out there would have to be a ball!

Mu preference is for the Leupold fixed 2.5X. Light weight & trouble free. No moving parts. Considerable field of view. . I find it far faster than open sights & even at 2.5x it allows you to pick out shapes in shadowy cover that your eyes can not . Look into the the shadows at 100yds away with just your eyes. You can't make out any thing. Then look thru the scope. Amazing what you can make out. Once you mount & actually use this scope you will be amazed how you can accurately place long shots plus place quick up close shots.
