Much less. The 5000 was the economy version, up here you would be realistically looking at $400 for the rifle itself.

I think $400 is a bit on the low side. Same action only different finishing is listed in the classifieds at $350. $895 is definitely on the HIGH side. $550 with scope tops. I picked this one up sans scope for about half what that 5000 is listed at. if the stock is in good shape, they are nice rifles. Be sure to check the rear tang area for cracks.

Much less. Trop's Gun shop would only give me $300 for mine and that was with a Leupold scope.

They are, after all, looking to make a profit. And giving you top dollar doesnt leave them much room for profit. They're just waiting for the next sucker to walk in and take half or less of what something is worth.
Oh, and believe it or not, deer bite. Fairly hard.

Keith, I have never bought a gun from a pawn shop. But have bought some nice used tools. My experience is start the negotiation with an offer at half of the tag on the item. Always have cash and show it with this offer. Pick a low number you can live with and be willing to walk out the door. Your testing the shops price they paid the shlep who had to pawn it. If your over their buying number and its a unique item that is not moving usually you get a good deal. But a Snap On wrench is pretty easy to check for any issues. Be sure you look the rifle over carefully and don't expect service after the sale. Let us know how it works out. Bob
I used to only shoot shotguns and rimfires, then I made the mistake of getting a subscription to handloader.......

I have two of these rifles, one is a 243 and one and a 257 Roberts. I have no use for the 30-06, or the four power Leopold. I figured $450-$500 was about right, for the right buyer.

Parts!
$80 4x $180 stock (Hard to find solid ones) $250 Barreled action sans trigger. (30-06 doesn't help) $200 Tradewinds adjustable trigger. "Hens Teeth" is how the last one I remember being listed on here was described.
If it's still there, offer $500 and keep what you want.

I have two right now and have owned several more over the years. But there are three or four of them are in local shops right now, none is marked above $450, and all of the shop owners would take a reasonable offer. That said, they're excellent rifles, known for being rugged, light, and accurate. They were designed and built to compete with the Winchester Featherweight and Browning Safari. They do a good job of that, but I'd top out at $550 IF the rifle had a solid Leupold scope. Okie John
If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

How does the 5000 differ from the 1640? They look the same.

They probably have different markings, but as a rule, the 5000 has a beech or birch stock, which is kinda yellow, like this: The 1640's tend to be walnut. This shot doesn't show the tiger-striping in this wood. It's astonishing, and it runs evenly from end to end. Also, all of the 5000's I've seen have a Monte Carlo stock and a 22" barrel, while most 1640's are stocked for irons and have 20.5" barrels. Rules of thumb, though, not hard and fast. I just buy them to shoot. Husqvarna collectors will know more. Okie John

I believe the 5000 is the economy model, stock and metalwork not finished as nicely. Same action as all the 1600 series. I am a fan of the husqvarnas, just wish their triggers were better and they had less issues with stock chipping/cracking.

Have had three 1640's both with military style trigger and cracked stocks, eventually I will hang on to one long enough to build something. Curious though, do all Tradewinds have the adjustable trigger or just certain models? Always assumed they did, but...

The adjustable trigger was an option, not often found! I think the model 7000/8000 (presentation/imperial) had the adjustable triggers standard.

How does the 5000 differ from the 1640? They look the same. It was the budget model.
