Lot of info over on Marlinowners. I opted for a JES rebore to 356 Win. and also have a Nonneman 307 Win rechamber. Both function flawlessly and are very accurate. Ranger Point Precision is a top notch outfit.

Doesn't a 336 that's been rechambered to .356 win function just fine using resized .308 brass?

Yes ! It also works great for the 307 W.

It's an interesting round. Not interesting enough to make me bite on it however. I would rather get a .375 Winchester done.

All the articles I’ve read over the years say how horrible it is to shoot a deer with that way under powered round. Then 2 pages later someone else is bragging on what a lighting bolt the 44Mag is out of whatever handgun. I went to a 30-30Ack to boost the performance but will probably never point it at a deer or whatever anymore. (I need to thin the collection anyway.). It shoots better but I’ve lost interest. Getting old is a pain in the.......

you may come back to the 30-30. i agree its a terrible round for deer..... it kills them dead.

Luckily they make 336s in 45/70, and I don't think I need anymore power than that.

I've shot 5 deer with my 336 30-30. All dead on the spot at less than 125 yards.

Doubt I'd ever hunt iwth it in flat open country where 200+ yards is the norm. But in the east Texas pine country it's just fine.

I think the 30-30 is the most reliably boring deer cartridge I've ever used. And that's a good thing!

The 444 is a darn powerful 336

Had a couple 30-30 336's , they are fine rifles for their purpose . The only 336 I have now is a 35 Remington . The only 30-30 I have is a Savage 340 , for whatever reason this thing shoots 30-30 ammo as good as it gets , often an inch or so .
There is no telling what the numbers of deer are that have been taken with the 30-30 .
Yep , there are stories of deer being wounded and never found , but you can figure most of those stories come from people who would have the same problem with any caliber .
Then there are deer who just take a spell to realize they are dead . Have seen deer with lungs literally mushed run a hundred yards or so .
Have seen them drop dead in their tracks and not a vital hit .

Agreed ! Messing with the 30 30 is not done because it is needed. The 30 30 probably killed more deer than anything except maybe the ‘06 . It is just done by us that like to tinker .

Regarding the 36 RPP, I've got one - the first one sold by RPP. It is a nail driving fire-breather. As for re-inventing the 356, the 36 RPP exceeds the 356 in performance. My rifle is fitted with a 24inch Douglas premium barrel.

I don't load mine at maximum and I still get over 2800 fps with 180 grain Speer bullets. It is a point blank rifle beyond 200 yds.

Lately, RPP has been receiving orders for the 36RPP. I am no longer the only one to have this long-range thumper.

Ranger Point Precision has built several custom rifles for me based on the 336 - 36 RPP, 7-30 Waters, 25-35 Winchester and 219 Donaldson Wasp. All wear Douglas premium barrels and are very accurate.

I was shooting an old school steel chest plate at Cheatham
Range about 2 months ago with hornady 160gr leverevolution
At about 115 yards to the berm
It was leaving almost half inch deep smacks and banging that plate pretty good.
People on the line was wondering what I was shooting
When I said 30-30, a couple asked if they was hot handlers
Said nope just leverevolution factory loads.

Ain't had a 30-30 since I was 16 or 17 yrs old
Had a 1980 336 with 24inch barrel and half tube
Sold it like a young fool......

54 now and got a 36g.
Basically have gone full circle back to simple and effective

Mod70ot6 stayed home all last fall

Could have killed plenty of deer
But I wanta kill something worthy
At least an 8 well outside of its ears

Let at least 3 15 -16 inch spread 8,s walk last year

Might pay off this year for me I hope

There is no denying the effectiveness of the 30-30. I have several including 336As with the 24 inch barrels. Like Shawlerbrook said, if need were our motive, we would not look beyond the 30-30 for most applications. Something different ? - well, that has little to do with need. And, if need were our purpose, we would probably have two rifles and a shotgun. LOL

I have a friend who considers himself well armed with a .357 revolver, a 12 ga 870, and a 700 in .30-06. Sorry folks, but I was warped as a child during WWII. The family had a single shot Winchester .22 and a double barrel 12 ga. The 12 died and there were no parts or civilian replacements other than the used market, and few folks were selling. I "need" more than 2-3 guns.

Otherwise, my first deer fell to a 30-30 in 1960. Since then I have used over a dozen different cartridges for killing deer. They all killed them dead. My next deer is scheduled to fall to the .30-30, coming full circle.

Just keep one of each around....30/30 and 356, that is. Since I have a 356, plenty of brass, and 308 brass will work in s pinch, and can load (2) of accubonds in it, there’s way no reason for a 36 RPP, for me....though it’s cool.
