That's about the jist of the matter, I am trying to learn about this shotgun's quality.

All the old model 12's are quality.. I have one heavy duck with a solid rib.. Great gobbler gun.. I have used it on open country grouse and pheasant.. I am a Rem. man, but this is one fine shotgun..

I have read but can not confirm with first hand knowledge that the heavy duck models had lengthened forcing cones which helped with the quality of the shot patterns. Perhaps someone could confirm.

Most mod 12's had 2 3/4" chambers & max barrel lengths of 30 "

The heavy duck generally came with 32" barrels & 3" chambers. Having handled & observed many 12's over the years, I sure there were variations & special order guns, Winchester in those days would accept special request. I would say that over the years, ribs or the lack of, varied. But solid or what was called matted is the one that comes to mind most often when speaking about the special duck. Full or super full, fixed chokes will be the most encountered. !2 ga. of course.

The quality of the M12 goes without question. All solid steel, machined parts. Built in adjustments to compensate for wear. Nearly indestructible. Heavy. Not rated for steel shot.

It might accept thin walls, but not sure if they rate for steel. Guessing here also.

The Heavy Duck had a slightly thicker barrel than the standard Model 12. To balance the gun, there was approximately 4 ounces of lead in the stock. The barrels were 30 and 32 inch, most were plain or had a solid rib. There were a few with factory vented ribs but they are rare and consequently often faked. The solid winchester pad was standard on the stock with a LOP about a half inch shorter than standard.

Cougee,

Forgot to mention that I had once owned an 870, new in 2005...action was rough as a cob and really felt..well..., cheap.

I could dig a early Wingmaster for sure, yet then again I could dig a lot of others too...Benelli for example.

But I like the classics if they aint been too Bubba'd.

The most common Heavy Duck barrel length is 30”; the 32” is somewhat rare.

These are great guns as others have noted here. Length of pull on these guns came 13 1/2” from the factory to account for the shooters wearing heavy clothing.

They both are great pump shotguns. However, that nasty little thing called time, has decisively proven the 870's twin action bar out lasting or being better than the Model 12, only means anything to those who believe Remington's magazine adds.

The 870 was made to last a life time of hard use. The Model 12???? Two at minimum. They never did cheapen the Model 12. When they couldn't make it to the standard and make a profit, it was done. Reason being a Model 12 was all machined steel and essentially hand fit. In the glory years of the "Wingmaster" it never reached that standard.

Not degrading the 870, because I've put way more shells thru an 870 than a Model 12. But if the better of the two is the choice, take the Model 12 and run away.

However, Remington did put the safety in the right place. A point on which some will disagree.

Have it opened to Modified and happily shoot steel. Or just use one of the other new heavy shot options, which in most cases will be the better choice.

I shot bismuth in my Heavy Ducks with very good results. They are only original once and I wanted to keep them that way. Other than that, I couldn't agree more with everything Battue said.

I have a 16 M12 that I hunt grouse with. It has a crowfoot. That safety is quicker than my 870s.

It is some type of flip safety and I won't disagree since I'v never seen one in action. However, it would have to be slick, since for myself I like the safety in the rear where it is closer to the trigger finger which pushes it off.
