Waiting for me at my LGS when I get home Wednesday is a BSA Majestic in 458 Win Mag. Got a great deal on it. Also have quite a bit of new brass and 250 Hornady 500 grain RN on the way. I have on hand RL 7 and 10x, 8208, H322, H335, 4198, Trailboss (for light loads), 3031 and few other appropriate powders I'm sure.

Any favorite loads for that bullet? Thanks guys.

I've only used RL 15 and Varget with 500's.

RL7 is the bees knees for 350's.

I load 72 gr Varget behind a Hornady 500 soft@ 3.32 OAL.

Regulates to the sights on my Whitworth.458 Mauser, and a Model 70 Super Express.

Hodgon data list 70 to 74 grains.
I've loaded up to 74 grains with no sign of pressure, but start at 70 and work up carefully.

Accuracy and Case extraction is great for me at 72 grains.

Hodgon Reloading website also lists H335. loads but I haven't tried these.

Enjoy the new Rifle!

Mart,

My 458 really likes H335 with 500gr. It's not temp stable, but that's not much of an issue here. I tried it because I happened to have it on hand at the time. It shot cloverleafs, and I wasn't interested in further load development! smile

Jeff,

I have H335 on hand and it will be one the first ones I try. I doub't I'll be getting to Africa with this rifle, or any other for that matter, so temperature sensitivity isn't an issue for me.

Mart

I use H335 in my no.1
Never hunted with it, I just shoot 24” steel plates out to 175yrds. Rings them pretty good.

I consider RL7 too fast of a powder for 500's.

510gn Winchester SP Factory 2010 4576 - 25 inch CZ 550

I don't use this bullet anymore as there are better choices including the 550gn Woodleigh which I am partial to.
AR 2207 is H 4198
AR 2208 is VARGET
AR 2206 now has variants I have not used.

AA2230 is a must to try as it works well with other bullet weights and generated high velocities.

A rule of thumb with 500 grain 458 Winchester loads. If the powder works well with 50 grain bullets in a .223 Remington, it will work well with 500 grain bullets in the 458 Winchester.

AA 2230 and Ramshot Exterminator (now the same powder) have worked well for me.

H-335 has worked well.

Phil Shoemaker uses IMR 3031. Nuff said.

Woodleigh bullets recommends Hodgdon Benchmark in their reloading manual.

I use a Lee Factory Crimp die to apply a good crimp.

As the 458 Winchester is a short case to begin with, and you need all the neck purchase you can get, only trim 5 thou off the case. 2.495 inches.
