Books are about 5% as effective as a video in this case. YOU go to Youtube and watch a few until you find some good ones and refer him to them/it. Downloaded to his smartphone, it'll be with him in the field.

You could just let him do it hard way. I remember my friend asking me “have you ever gutted one of these before “ after I shot the first deer either of us had ever killed. Me: “no”. Friend:” So how are you going to do it” . Me: “ Just like a great big rabbit, here help me roll him over and hold this leg”. Worked fine. That was 35 years ago.

Here is one I recommend. It's kind of long, but very instructional.

Get Mule Deer's cookbook, and turn him loose on YouTube. A picture is worth a 1000 words and all that.
