sse's thread has me wanting to ask, about toasting bread. No electric toaster? I have seen devices for placing bread over a gas burner.
What about a campfire, Other cases?

I have a toaster oven.
It not only makes toast but it's handy for baking smaller items in the summer when you don't want to heat the house up with the big oven.

Have had some really godawful bread both desecrated and desiccated on one of those useless wire-frame contraptions placed over a gas burner.

Skillet toast.

Better with good bread, but store bought loaf bread will work.

Lightly butter one side.

Place butter side down in a hot skillet . . . YES, cast iron.

Check til desired level of "browness" is reached, flip and do the other side.

Savor!

+1 on skillet toast, I make a breakfast sandwich with bread toasted in the skillet with bacon fat. Toast the bread, add fried egg, sausage patty and cheese.

I remember as a teenager working on a fishing boat, you'd get a cast iron fry pan (or stove top) hot, sprinkle a little salt on it and put the bread on that. Idea was that the salt would keep it off the surface. I remember it working pretty good.

My BIL uses a torch like that to light his charcoal grill, 5 min. and the briquettes are white hot and ready to grill. No lighter fluid taste either.
