Has anyone tried the 135 grain Hornady FTX in a 30-30? Bonus points given if you've tried it on deer. Double-bonus points issued if you can name the load you used.

I'm just wondering, because #1 granddaughter likes the Savage 340 I bought, and I'm thinking of working up a Yute load for her to try.

Shaman,

I have used CFE-223 and Hodgdon "LVR" powder with the 130 gr Speer bullet obtaining MOA 3 shot groups. I doubt 5 grains difference of bullet weight will cause an issue. My favorite powder was IMR- 4759 for bullet weights 130 grains and under and obtaining velocity in the 2000 FPS range. Sadly IMR or Hodgdon discontinued the powder 3/4 years ago. I know "SEAFIRE is sitting on 63 pounds of SR-4759.

I would say the lighter ( 125 to 135) grain 30-30 bullets reduce the recoil by 30 to 40 % over the heavier 150 to 170 gr bullets so you just might fine with speedier loads for your granddaughter using the lighter bullets

I do believe Hornady just announced the 30-30 135 gr FTX bullet for 2018...doubt they have shipped any yet.

not what you asked for , but still on subject yute loads, a lot of buzz about Barnes TAC 110 and 120 grain bullets in a 30-30 prove to be hog hammers in the Texas crowd, I found 110s but the 120s I really want seem to have vanished, I would assume that a BlueDot load and the 110s would suffice for reduced recoil as well as a close range bambi slayer, Just a thought

if you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine

Thanks all!

I'm thinking I'll order a box and play with my stash of LVR.

Checking to see if you had a chance to "Play" with this 135gr Bullet in the 30-30 platform?
