I was looking at getting a Henry pump 22 for squirrel hunting and would like to know what people think of it in the field and how it shoots? I was also looking at scoping it up with the FX1 4x28 rimfire scope and was wondering if anyone had that combo and how it feels. I didn't want the scope to throw off the balance of the rifle, which is why I was looking at the lightweight fixed power. Any optics recommendations and rifle reviews appreciated. Thanks!

I read a lot of bad stuff about their pump actions. I'd get a Remington new or used, or a Winchester if I wanted a pump action.
If I wanted a Henry, it would be a lever. And probably a 22 Magnum since 22 Magnum lever action rifles are otherwise expensive and not always available.

When my son worked in the gun dept. at Gander, the two brands that were brought back the most with problems were Henry and Taurus/Rossi. That was early on, so things may have improved. The boys that have them sure seem to love 'em, especially the shiny ones. Raccoon blood in their family tree, I suspect.

There's a guy on YouTube that specializes in rimfires; .22Shooter or some such. Check out some videos.

I've never read or heard anything about their pump actions. I did win a Rossi pump action i a raffle about 30 years ago. It was a nice little shooter. Don't have it any more. I gave it to a friend in Battle Mountain, NV.

The Taurus pumps look pretty good, except for that silly safety. Never seen a Rossi.

You won't see many Rossi's. I've had one for decades and it's fit and finish are great. It also shoots. I believe newer models may have lost some of the earlier quality from what I've read. Mine is an exact replica of a 62 Win.

I saw a Rossi at the pawn shop the other day. It felt solid. But not an option if you want a scope.

After looking on the web, it appears most of the problems with the Henry pump action was with the 22 Mag, and not the 22LR.

Thanks all for the feedback! I am waiting for Uncle Sam to give me my money back, and I will probably end up with one in the gun safe:)

Don't know much about Henry pumps but I've got a 1970's Rem 572 Fieldmaster pump that just works. Grooved receiver, feels and shoots nice. Old wood and steel tank, but not to heavy to tote around the woods.

That would be the way to go or maybe a Savage Model 29 B. The later ones came grooved too. The best pump is the Winchester 61 but very spendy, especially if you find a newer one grooved for a scope. Same with the Rem 121 but not quite the dollars as a Winchester.

This question may get better answers over at Rimfirecentral in the "Henry" threads.

Pumps.

I have a colt lightning pump, so old there is no 4473 paperwork transfer.
Not a great gun and not in great condition, but I did kill a big raccoon with it [in a trap]

I have a winchester 62a, that is a safe queen.

I have a couple remington 572s. I have killed so much stuff with one of them, there should be a law against it.

I have a Rem 121

I have a Rem 12 [safe queen]

I have a Rem 12a

I have a Win 1906, old basket case I nursed back to health

I have a Win 61. That is my best pump. The only thing it can do that a rem 572 cannot is shoot shorts straight up all day.

Can't speak to the Henry pump but my son still has a Rossi pump I bought him around 25 years or longer ago. He says it's still accurate and reliable and his favorite go-to .22 rim fire rifle.
