Guys...

I stopped in a pawn shop today and found something that is tempting me to go back and get it, except there are a couple items I want to run by you...

Its a very good in shape rem 514 22 tube feed thats new enough to have a grooved scope receiver.
The two odd things on it are someone put a nylon 66 sight set on it front and rear. I actually always liked these sights, but they look a little odd.
And the bolt may have been bent down because it looks torch heated.
Otherwise this thing is in great condition and worth looking at again.

$110.

Buy it or what should I look at deeper?

Oh... this is very similar to the 22 my grandma owned and I took my firearms safety with, but I did not inherit. It has a little sentimental nostagia, but mostly I like the 51X series and have a 510 single shot already.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a 512. Unless it's falling apart, sounds like a good deal. I'd get it.

I think the 512 is single shot, 514 is tube fed. If the bore is in good shape, that is a steal for $110 IMO. These rifles shoot very well once you get use to the trigger. Shame there isn't much you can do for them. The grooved receiver is a big plus.

At $110 it would be hard to go wrong - I would buy it just because of the price.

I believe the 512 is the mag fed model with the beehive bolt, my dad had one and he was a hellava good shot with it.

The 512 is a tube fed .22 rifle. The 513 is a mag fed rifle. The 514 is a single shot rifle. All very good .22 rifles!

You forgot about the 510 single shot, and the 511 mag fed rifles.

OP ....... It’s probably a 512-X, the X series rifles had sights that were very similar to, if not the same as, the sights on the Nylon series rifles. I also believe that the X series rifles all had grooved receivers, not the case for the pre-X series rifles.

Thanks guys...

Its a 512X and those nylon 66 sights are by design. A bit hideous, but that rifle may be slightly collectable and I will check it out.

When Remington changed the front/rear sight style starting in 1964, they added an "X" after the model designations to identify the change. The "X" suffix 510 thru 514 series rifles were only made for 3 or 4 years and don't seem to be very common anywhere I have been. It is hard to miss that shark fin shaped front sight in a gun rack or on a show table.

Mine is a 511, has a 6 shot removable mag and super accurate. I would buy any 5 series rifle for 110 bucks!

The results are....

I got it for $109 cash out the door.
Its indeed a 512 X in good shape and wasn't shot much.
Rifling was bright, but kind of scratch looking. not sure about that because there was no cleaning rod crown wear.
The "heat discolor" was the whole thing has case hardening color so its kind of neat
Some finish crazing but in good shape. Needs a good rub down though.

I ran a bunch of live rounds through the action and it didnt eject up a few. I think I need to give it a good spa treatment and I suspect it ejects spent cases better.
The rounds eject when cycled with some authority except the last one because there isn't a magazine round pushing things up.
It may not be a good youth trainer if the bolt needs to be worked harder, but overall im happy with it.

Oddly its new enough to have a orange magazine follower tip which seems out of place for a 1960s rifle

It will look good next to my 510, cz452, marlin 39, and 121 pump.
the souless newer 22s will have to stay on the other side of the safe away from my walnut stuff.

Its hard to believe how good the wood & metal was on these older guns and that the CZ 452 is similar and considered a much higher end 22 now.

By the way a 514 is a single shot that the rear cocking piece twists as the safety

Failure to eject may be caused by gunk and perhaps a good cleaning will help. If not get a chamber reamer, that will clean up small damage from dry firing.

correction...

When I said eject I meant to fly out of the action and not the chamber.

The full case would fall back into the action if the bolt wasn't worked with enough force.

I do fear this may be a problem with Remington tube load bolt actions because I had a friend had a similar deal, but my suspensions is this is just dirty. Or I hope so.

I just bought one for $50 out the door in 90% condition. Accurate as any other open sight .22 I’ve encountered.

My brother had the Nylon 12. Sounds like they put walnut on some of those barreled actions, or maybe someone did after the fact. I seem to recall the orange follower, now that you mention it.

The bolt from his worked perfectly in an old boltless 51-something or other that lay under a bed at my grandmother's.

Christ, where are you guys finding these 51x models for these prices!? I grew up on a 514 scout model(short barrel) that was and is superbly accurate. Brother got that one. I’ve been passively looking for a long time but everyone seems to think they’re made of gold.

I've seen a bunch of them in pawn shops. All that I remember were between a hundred and a hundred and fifty.
But I don't recall any with the grooved receiver or I might've bought it.

Update:

It seems like a little cleaning and oiling will do wonders.

They work pretty stiff and that may have been their demise over box magazines.

Im kind of liking it because you will never forget the magazine or lose it.
