I was very happy to see that Hornady has added the 7x64 to its No.10 reloading manual. I am having one of my .257 Roberts' rebarreled to this round and loading data was very hard to find. Norma had it but only listed Norma powders which is no good here in Australia. I found an old Lee manual that said reduce too atey (.280) data by 5 percent. Even our local powder manufacturer (ADI) had zero data. And then out of the blue Hornady add this old cartridge to their reloading line up. I hope they include Hodgdon powders as this is about all we can get here (apart from very infrequent imports of Reloder powders every few years).

Any reason why this old cartridge would be added to Hornady's data? Are there a few of them getting around with European Tikkas, Sakos, Mausers etc. being sold? Anyway, I'm glad Hornady decided to add it as they timed it very nicely.

Three cheers.

Looks like you're in luck. i just got around to buying a Hornady #10, and it's showing IMR4007SSC, Hybrid 100V, IMR 4350, H4350, and H481 for 139gr to 175gr bullets.

We get the Hodgdon Extreme powders only (as they are made here) so modern data with H4350 and H4831 will suit me fine. I wish we had the selection of powders that you get over there. Thanks for the heads up.

Back in the day I was never a fan of Hornady's spire point bullet design, now they have cone out with some better bullet designs. I am liking their SST 100gr. in my .257 Roberts.

Nick Harvey's manual lists loads for the 7x64. The 7x64 and .280 are listed together, as was the case with earlier editions of the ADI manual. They are, after all, virtually identical cartridges.

I like the flat base interlocks (spire point) a lot. Find them very reliable on game and decently accurate, as well as affordable!

I can't say that all my favorite bullets are made by Hornady, but I can say that I possess and shoot Hornady bullets in every caliber and cartridge I shoot. That includes 17, 20 22, 243, 277, 284, 308, 312, 355, 357, 358, 40, 430, 452, 458.

They are also the only US manufacturer to provide 8x68S load data in their manuals since #6. Also the only US manufacturer that loads the 8x57 to its potential. Indeed three cheers for hornady!!!! Now if they would just bring back the 100gr interlock in .257 they would be total rock stars.

I reckon I have laid in a supply to do me for the next 20 years. I usually shoot it in one of my .257 Roberts' but currently
I have all three loaded with something else. I am loading it in my .250 Savage though.

What is that you like about the SST ?

How do they perform on game ?

Over the yrs. I've used H S Ps in 6mm, 270, 7mm, & 30 calibers.
243 & 6mm Rem, 7mm R Mag, 308, 3006, & 300 W Mag. They have performed exceptionally well. Much better for me than some other popular bullets.

Curious about the SST on game .

I have been out of the .257 loop for several years. When did they discontinue the 100gr Spire Point? I never loaded them in the 257 Roberts when I had one of those and have never used them in my 25/06 in which I only shoot 100gr Partitions. I did wonder through the years why Weatherby chose to load them in their own 257magnum.

Hornady discontinuing the 100gn SP was a bit of a weird decision. They are about the only manufacturer not offering a 100gn in their .257 line. That's a pretty common bullet weight in that calibre.

The 100gr spire point is my go to in the bolt action .250s, the ,250 AI, and the .257s. Also works well in the .25/06, although I fell into a couple hundred Nosler solid base a couple years ago that hammer deer and return groups as tight as ballistic tips.

I was glad to see the 7x64 data in the latest manual, its the only reason I bought it as a matter of fact.

Whats real interesting is the difference in load data for the 7x64 and the 7x65R. Same case, one just has a rim. There is quite a in charge weights with the same bullets. Just makes you realize that every rifle barrel is different.

If anyone at Hornady is reading this, bring back the .257 100 grain Interlock!

They've been doing all kinds of good stuff for us: brass, ammo, and bullets for orphans like the .33, .348, .25/35, .405, etc, plus neat stuff like the ELDs. Some other stuff we like might fall to the wayside as a result, I guess. The lesson here, I suppose, is that if you find a component you like, better lay in enough to last you while you can. We should have learned that during the Obama " troubles", but like they say, "Too soon old, and too late smart".

I downloaded a copy of #10 a while back, and was amazed by the cartridges it has data for.

So why did Hornady include the 7x64? Is it becoming more popular in the States? I've seen a few posts discussing Tikkas so I guess a few Tikka 7x64s are getting around.
