Here's a good one. Three 257 Roberts rifles showed up over the weekend at the local gun shop. All used. Just about mint Ruger 77UL, 20" barrel w/no sights, w/factory rings-$699, Rem 722 open sights but drilled and tapped for scope, 24" barrel, maybe 85%-$599, and another Rem 722, open sights, also drilled and tapped for scope, also 24" barrel-maybe 70% honest wear-$499.

Which one to buy? Owned and sold a 257 77UL in past, and have been kicking myself since - really liked the rifle. The 722's have a lot of character, however, and their actions are so smooth. Wood on all three guns good and solid - 77 just about perfect, 722's honest wear with a few scratches here and there, no cracks in tang or anything.

Leaning towards the 77 as a trim, light walking gun. but those 722's have some magic - tough to put a finger on it. Will mount a 2x7 Leupold on winner.

What to do? I'm going to go buy one in the morning, but which one? Hunt in northern MN and WI woods.

Somebody throw me a bone here - tell me what I can't outright see...I already own a very accurate 257 Browning BLR, shooting 117 Fed Premiums.

The 722 is somewhat short for the 257, I really like my Ruger UL and would not trade it for a 722. I would however not hesitate to own a 257 Remington 722.

I really like my Ruger Hawkeye 257 Roberts UL.

Buy the Ruger and one of the 722's

Cant go wrong that way.

I have a Hawkeye in .257 Roberts and I love it. I’d go with the Ruger.

Later Remington M722's were factory d&t. Classic gun....

I say go with the 722. Also, I am going to need you to PM me the name and phone number of the gun store so I can get my FFL to send his info in for the Ruger UL.😏

Ruger for me. Plus the UL is just a much handier pkg imho than a stock 722.

Ruger, no question about it...

and considering I've hunted Northern MN and No Wisconsin for 10 plus years...

I'd recommend the Ruger even more so...

77 RL

I've had three Ruger ULs, two in .250 Savage that shot well and one .30-06 that didn't, though it may have been fine with bedding work, etc. I've had two 722s, a .222 and a .300 Savage, both were very accurate, more so than the Rugers. The Remington is certainly heavier than the Ruger, but far from burdensome.

I’d have to go for the Ruger. I wish Tikka would make one in their T3 Forest or Hunter.

I just acquired and 77RL in 257 Bob, but not shot it yet.
I love the way the old RLs carry like a .22. The RL will probably
take some tweaking for accuracy and for repeatability from session to session, but that is OK with me.
This will make a nice stable mate for my RL in 308 that I have had for about 25 years.

I have a MKII 257 Roberts ultralight and it is my favorite hunting rifle. I love the way they look feel and carry. If you get frustrated with rifles that aren't ragged hole accurate, the UL probably isn't for you. With almost no load development I found a load that would give me 1.5 inch groups and I never looked further. That gets it done at my hunting ranges. Is the one you are looking at a Hawkeye or other? If you decide not to get it, PM me where it is.

depending on barrel condition, the remingtons are more likely to be accurate out of the box. prices seem a little steep.

I would go for the 77UL for the easy carrying, but Im sure the 722s will give better accuracy.

The Ruger. But I'm biased and have no experience with the 722's but have heard good things about them. I wish my Roberts was in the UL. I"m assuming it is a tang safety. I have a UL in a 270. Even though I don't hunt with it any longer, I love the way the gun handles and shoots. Can't remember what kind of groups it shot when I first got it, but my shooting buddy at the time always told me he wanted first shot at it when I got rid of it...lol.

Go with the Ruger UL, mine shoots .5" 5 shot groups with 110 AB and IMR4350. It's the older red pad tange safety.
