Rav's have a very good reputation. They're AWD but they aren't off road cars any more, just good sound highway cars.

We have an 09 RAV4 limited v6. Wife loves it and would buy another in a heartbeat.

Have had two rav4's a 1999 and 2000. Good little awd cars, though a bit under powered. The 2000 got totalled out, the 1999 was bought as a college commuter car for son but he ended up transferring out of state so now is a spare car with ~230k on it.

The only concern is if it's a manual transmission a clutch replacement will set you back $2500 due to the labor involved. I tried to save money by doing the job myself and after two days getting to the point I realized I couldn't get the tranny off the engine and another two days putting it back together before driving it to the shop I realized I'm going to limit my auto repairs to rotating tires, oil changes and brake jobs.

When my current car gives up the ghost I'll likely just use the rav as my commuter/beater. Even though the engine is gutless, you can have some fun with the short wheelbase drifting it on snowy/icy roads.

We recently bought a 2008 limited with the v6. I wanted the v6 because based on what I had read it gets almost the same mpg as the 4 banger and has lots of get up and go in a small SUV. I was pleased that is how it turned out in reality. We wanted a cheaper commuter car and traveling car. So far so good. We will probably hand it down to my youngest son once he is driving age. This way I am not driving my thirsty power wagon to work.

What have the genius auto engineers done to make it that expensive? I had a clutch put in my '08 Dodge diesel a couple years ago and it 'only' cost $1400. That included a high quality non-OEM clutch and flywheel.

You have to drop the front sub frame and power steeering before you can drop the engine and transmission to get to the clutch. A friend who has a shop gave me a bargain rate of $1700 in labor and I provided the parts. Other shops quoted $2500 parts and labor.

As I said in another thread, compact cars with transverse mounted engines are the work of the devil.
