A buddy invited me to go shoot at his ranch yesterday. When I was first invited years ago we shot the plates set at 325 and then backed up to a fence line to shoot at 500 with my bargain bin AR. It was easy to pepper the 24" plate but he saw the opportunity. That trip was the longest shots I had taken in my life and it gave me the bug. He picked out a spot at the back of the ranch to add more steel and a year or so later I tried 750 and hit the 24x36 plate *eventually* using a 300WSM EW with 180 Deep Curls and a Zeiss Conquest with a homemade BDC tape but that really got me interested in long range. In the last few years I have shot quite a bit at 400 and some at 600 with reasonable success but even since my last trip to Houston my equipment, loads and technique has changed and improved to a degree. This trip I had a solid 100 yard zero with a 6X SS and the velocity data on the 75 Amax over 'lever in the Montana 223. Shot 10 at 325 that measured 1.1 MOA and we moved to 750, shot a few times and made some rookie mistakes either dialing or with wind holds but saved the last ten for 900, I missed the first shot holding *with* the wind again but should have held right on as I did for the remaining 9. This was a blast and I do envy those who can drive out on public land and shoot, ya'll a lucky for sure.

Good shooting! Lots of fun shooting steel at distance, I have the fever but it's hard to find the place to shoot that far around here. I'm lucky enough to have steel set out to 1000yds in Mississippi.

Great shooting, RDW! RIO7, looks like you got that 900yd gong figured out this morning. Brown Cooper? Great pics, too. Ed

My range ain't literally right out my back door, but figuratively so. With about a 15 minute drive I can set up steel in multiple locations with about any range out to 1350 or so. Across ridges/ravines, through canyons, whatever I want to do. It sure is nice to be able to go shoot whenever I want and not be dependent on anyone else. I like being able to change it up too. I get bored shooting on the same range all the time.
Having said all that, I really do wish I COULD just open the door and shoot to 800-1000 for dope checks. But also maintain the option of varied setups as well.
LR is one of the most addicting forms of shooting I have ever done.

Yep, as Miles, calls it Aunt Jim My Ma, went early this morning before the wind picked up, the wind yesterday was 14 to 20 mph today they are saying 15 to 23 the wind really kicks my butt past 700 yrds. but if I waited to shoot when the winds not blowing I wouldn't ever get to shoot. Rio7

All Y'all have some nice shooting skills.
RIO7 - Is that with your .243 AI ?
VERY Nice indeed

Rio, count me as jealous on your setup also! Very nice!
And the nice thing about shooting long in the wind, is you then realize when to say yes and when to say no to shots

I'm 100% with Rio on the wind thing. Up here on the plains, If I waited for the wind to be nice I would never go. A couple of weeks ago at 1355 I was holding 3.5 mil of wind shooting a 6.5/143 ELD-X. At 32 degrees F I might add.
And yeah, Rio has a really nice setup judging by those pictures.

JTPinTX, where abouts are you up there? I've been hunting up there for over 20 years now. I've lived all over the place, and I've never seen wind blow perpetually like it does up in the TX Panhandle.

We are thankful for the breeze off the gulf in the summer makes it livable here, except for August during the dog days with no wind, and the windmills don't turn the water tanks start to dry up then we want wind.
Most of the time I go to the range early in the morning before the wind gets to strong, works most of the time. Rio7

Best thing you can really do is shoot about 10 pm or so. All you need is any kind of light on the target. None needed at the benchrest.
You can use a 12v batt and 12 volt bulb or about anything.
Thats when I did all my final load tweaking/testing at 600 here years ago when we still shot.
Generally wind still if its going to be that way. Does away with any mirage. Its very nice to shoot at night.

JG, I live in Wellington, 30 miles north of Childress. So I don't have perpetual wind quite like they do in Amarillo and Lubbock, but I would say I get about 75% of what they do. And since today is March 1rst, well, the wind is pretty much gonna blow the next 4-6 weeks anyways. Wind is 13 right now. Supposed to be 15-16 tomorrow, 16-18 on Sat and Sun. I don't even worry about it anymore, I just go shoot.
Except load testing, and making sure my zero is good. I cherry pick those times. Usually wind is good until around 10-11 am and I can get some quality shooting in then. Even though that 10 pm thing sounds pretty good too. I have done some zeroing of night vision around that time, and conditions sure are nice then on average.

Mine go out about 9pm or so generally but if we needed to do testing... Its amazing without the hint of wind AND mirage how much snugger groups get. Mind you thats only to confirm testing.... so we didn't do it that often... But it does confirm loads and zero's VERY WELL. Just remember it, it might come in handy some day. Once you have the load and zero's worked, the ONLY way to learn is to shoot in the wind. I loved windy days for matches.... I realized I'd likely not shoot a perfect score and might not even win, but every time I shot I generally learned more and felt more confident. And by confident that also meant to hold up right now and wait out the lull if you need to shoot... or like on game, no way in heck can you shoot in these conditions past X yards( sometimes that was 200 yards like it was the last day of deer season last year since the wind was blowing me around to much to hold still for a couple of 300 plus yard shots that I wanted to take.

rost495, Really don't mind shooting in the wind, as it's fun to see if I can shoot well when it's windy some times it seems that my bullets are going to do a U turn and come back the wind is so hard, I rarely get a shot on game here over 300 yrds most shots are inside 200 yrds because of the brush and high weeds there is no such thing as a prone shot here, I try to shoot sitting or standing with sticks and on the range I shoot sitting with my bags, you can bet I won't forget the shooting at night. Thanks Rio7

Higbean, It's an old airport that I turned into a gun range, it is a lot of fun, I am building a bunch of new steel targets now as my old ones are all shot up, we have been shooting them for over 10 years.time for some new ones. Rio7

I thought that looked a lot like a strip!
I get ya all the way around. Practicing for reality. Playing for the other stuff. And I loved shooting in the wind. Shooting in the calm was boring and repetitive. It only told you if you could break 22 shots in a row that were good enough or such.... but chasing around to get 22 and not drop a point was fun.
