Just finished Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollock. This is a collection of short stories, loosely connected, set in a small, poverty-stricken holler in Ohio. Not for the faint of heart, this a serious look at drugs and poverty and depravity and it’s excellent. Not for folks who have to read about roses and fairy tales and happy endings but if you appreciate good literature and want something gritty and contemporary, this is for you. I’m personally a big fan of short stories and these are very, very good.
