Converted a Remington 580 into a single shot 22 magnum, mill time setting the bolt back, making a new ejector to accommodate the bolt being set back and a little milling of the receiver. now range time tomorrow to see how it shoots. Next project is taking a Remington 591 install a new barrel and making a 17 WSM out of it

Pics please of the build and finished gun. Were firing pin strike location and strength any issue? I know the 580/540 action is pretty strong but will it handle the added pressure over time? The .22RF bore is about .002 smaller than the Mag. This should add a bit more pressure to the equation. I know SAAMI lists the RF and Mag as working at the same pressure, but I have also read that this is a typo as one was tested at CUP and the other PSI. Interesting build, let us know how it went!

shot it today and it shoots just like a 580 22lr does but in a 22 mag, I wanted a single shot 22 mag for a boat gun, time will tell if the added pressure will do anything to the action

I would be surprised if the mag pressures would affect that action. it is just a Remington 788 design that was scaled down. have had one for years in 17 mach 4 and it is still shooting fine. the last time I checked the headspace it had not grown so I assume the action didn't stretch or the ligs set back.

not really worried about action stretching, 6 locking lugs will do there job at 22 mag pressure, 22lr and 22 mags have the same working pressure of 24,000 psi

Dennis Olson used to convert 580's to .22 hornet, .218 bee and 17 bee without issues. The 591 and 592 in 5mm magnum was the same basic action and ran at 36,000 CUP.. There should certainly be no issue with your .22 mag. conversion in regards to pressure.

Gemby,

Interesting thread... as I have a 580, picked it up at a local gun shop for $100 last summer, couldn't snap it up fast enough. Looked for one for years for a .22 Short re-barrel, I'm using this one as a dedicated 22LR "CCI Quiet" Rifle. The trigger is horrible (6+ pounds), but for some reason I can still shoot it well.

Jerry I never seen a 580,581 that don't shoot, I have a 581 that dedicated for stingers, it's a 1/2" gun @ 100 yards, my dedicated CCI quite 22 in a 541s its a tack driver at 50 yards. trigger can be reworked I have done them down to 16 ounces. maybe your 580 needs a new barrel to make it a shooter, i have new never installed 581s barrels. I've often wondered about .224 accuracy in a .223 bore. Guess it don't make a flip...

Can someone explain what you mean by having the bolt set back?

milled the groove in the bolt for the bolt stop to let the bolt move farther back, making for a longer bolt travel

22 magnum shoot quite well out of a 22 long rifle bore, was out shooting it today and shot some 5/8" groups at 100 yards, going to try other ammo to see if I find the one it really likes.

I may do more of these, with the 581 it would have to be a single shot
