Brother has a 358 win and I think there way cool, but I picked up a husky in 8mm and I think it is about the same. What do you think 8x57 or 358 win!

I think the 8x57 is a great cartridge and own one myself in a Sako Grizzly. I have settled on the Nosler 8mm 180gn Ballistic Tip with H4895. The 8x57 is so under-loaded by the US ammo makers that you can really improve the ballistics by hand loading and you will learn a lot about recognising pressure signs.

8x57 on factory ammo is like a 30-30 AI. Makes for a nice easy shooting rifle. Or juice it up with some handloads or Euro offerings for a little more range.

Between the two and assuming they are to be used in a Mauser action to include the Husqvarna, I pick the 8x57. 200 grains at 2700 fps is doable and more than enough to get the job done on most game you'd care to shoot. The Husky will feed that 8x57 slick as snot. My favorite 8x57 is a Husky 1640 that has been beat to heck. Before it was imported it racked up an impressive number of Moose and has continued to be deadly on Whitetail and Piggies. Still looks like heck but shoots itty bitty groups.

I have multiples of both. I don't see much difference between the two and base my choice on the rifle rather than the cartridge. I feel the 8 mm has a slight advantage on the lower end as there are plenty of 150 gr bullets available. I load some of these with a minimum charge of Varget for my grandkids when they start hunting.

On the other end, I prefer the 358 for larger game up close as I use 250 gr bullets in them. On paper and in real life there isn't much difference but psychologically I think there is. If I would have used logic rather than emotion before buying my BLR in 358 Win I probably would have saved my money and used the 8mm I already had.

The 8x57is was the first modern rifle cartridge, introduced in 1905 and has not yet been substantially improved on.

Merely owning one automatically gives you a number of perks, you will find that you are now indescribably classier, more confident, and probably more attractive to the opposite sex. You will soon be finding yourself in a position where women want you and men want to be you....

Now go forth and load up some 200gr Partitions and you will receive total enlightenment.

Yeah, I sure like mine, great cartridge.

Mine is a receiver sighted custom I found in north Idaho. It is built on the small ring large thread Mauser so I load it just a bit above book loads. We took it to Africa in 2012 and dropped a few critters using the 180 Ballistic Tip over CFE 223.

I don't know about all that. 7.5x55 Swiss, 1889. 6mm Lee Navy, 1895. There might be some others, I'm not sure.

I like mine.
It's a full stock Mauser I made a while back. Deer elk and antelope have all fallen to it.

The 8x57is was the first to combine a rimless bottleneck case with a spitzer bullet. Made the 30/03(a copy of the 7x57 stretched a bit and necked up) obsolete overnight.

Fell in love with 8 rem mag once I'd shot my BIL's...but never bought one for various reasons and even had one offered to me here, but still had so many other things going and needed that the 8 would be a redundant to the 338 win mag and the 338/378 or so... that I just never got that far.

Cool? Maybe, but its really whatever floats your boat.

A smith once asked me why I wanted a 7x300 wtby.... I said because... he said ok, that was enough, that he understood, and figured if that was my answer then I knew there were a couple of better more sensible options... yep... but 7x300 wtby it was, still is, and though it sucks in the accuracy department, I still like having the oddball.

The pointed bullets...I see. That was a big advantage in range indeed.

Mauser, no question...

if you want, you can load an 8mm Mauser to 358 speeds but not the reverse...

I thought the 8x57 came out in 1888 in Germany's Model 1888 "Commission" rifle? It was originally a .318" bore with a 220 something grain round nose which was changed to a 150 gr spritzer in 1905. The bore diameter was increased to .323" at this time too.

I believe the French were first to use a spitzer bullet in their 8mm Lebel cartridge sometime before 1900 but that was a rimmed cartridge making the 8x57 the first rimless military cartridge to use a spitzer bullet as already mentioned. I don't think anyone cared much about this development as the French were not major players in the international arms market like Germany. With volley fire being at least a theoretical practice in military doctrine, the greater range of a spitzer gave cause for concern.

Which is why it is so pitifully under loaded by US ammo companies...there are 2 8x57's the 8x57i(sometimes written j) with a .318 bore and the is(js) with a .323 bore. CIP(Euro) spec ammo is marked accordingly and the shooter is expected to know which one they have. The way the US Companies go about it is to just neuter it to the point that if you have a .318 bore it is probably not going to blow up from the wrong bullet being forced down the tube.

Basically the equivalent of calling the 270 and the 280 the same and loading .284 bullets for both at about 2/3 of the preasure they were designed for.

The 8x57 is a sentimental favorite of mine. Back when I was growing up in NE WI, buying one was a $100-250 proposition. It'd mean getting a M98 in anything from "as issued" to Kitchen Kustom to pretty nicely done sporting rifle. The one I bought back in those days slightly after the glaciers receeded still lives in the safe. It goes out hunting from time to time for old times' sake.

I don't think I'd buy an 8mm Mauser in civilian trim....

mainly because I love a Military Mauser so much....

I don't pump mine up much...

my favorite bullet is the Speer 170 SMP...

and my powder of choice is 4198....

from 20 to 35 grains.. its a good performer....

when I hunt with it, I sorta think about it like a 32 Win Special... in a bolt action...

that 170 SMP will certainly hang a job on what it hits tho.. either fast or slow...
