A friend of mine cuts trees for a second job.
A tree got even with him by bouncing off some other trees and then hit him.
He had had several surgeries and now is considering amputation of his leg.

sorry to hear this. worked with a guy that did tree work on the side. sawed his safety line in two, and plummeted to the ground. game over. and in an instant too.
they call falling tree limbs in the woods "widow makers" for a reason, and it's a good one.

Very sorry for your friend. A lot of times it is not the falling tree that gets you, it is when the tree hits the ground, or another tree and then punches back that can cause lots of grief.

A co-worker of mine was about 1,000 ft up a TV broadcast tower in the midwest when his co-worker somehow managed to fall from about 500 feet above him.
According to my co-worker, the falling man screamed a brief apology as he passed by. He hit a guy-wire from another tower a few hundred feet from the ground, which about ripped him in half. The ground finished the job.
My co-worker friend had to retire from that tower company due to PTSD.
It's a dangerous world out there, above the ground.

I own/operate a heavy equipment business. Trees are by far the most dangerous part of my occupation. I feel safer in a 9' deep trench than pushing over trees with a dozer or excavator.
I generally pass on tree jobs these days.
Do not feed the bear!

Sorry to hear about your friend.
I have felled a couple dozen trees last 3 weeks. I'm dropping diseased trees for crop-tree release and fuelwood. Had one spin a couple days ago on me. Luckily I was just a little faster than it was. Def I won't cut when the wind is gusting.

I'm sorry to hear of your friend's injury.
When I'm felling trees, I don't stick around to watch my handiwork. That trunk starts moving and so do I, 90 degrees to the direction of the fall and most quickly, without the saw.

I cut 7 cords of wood so far for heating my house this season.
I am solo so very careful.
My friend had a helper who used a dog leash for a tourniquet.
It saved his life.
I will be very careful from now on cutting by myself.
