Just recently bought a 264 Win Mag. It’s a 1-9 twist. 26” barrel. Looking for loads or starting point. The reason I asked is that I would like to load some 140 grain bullets but have read that accuracy was hit or miss. I’ve read these rifles are tack drivers with 120-130 grain bullets. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My current 264 (26"bbl; /9"twist; M70 )shoots 140gr Sierra GKs into very nice groups. For hunting bambi, I prefer the 125 Partition.

I have a Model 70 26" 1-9" shooting 142 LRABs at 3200 with RL33

I have been loading & shooting the 264 mag since 1964. I have three of them. 1/8 & 1/9 twist. I have taken numerous antelope , deer & elk with it. When it comes to deer the Barnes 100gr TTSX will shoot completely thru the largest muley buck. Using IMR-7828 will drive this bullet to 3700 FPS safely. Sighted .76 high at 100yd 0.0 at 200 -6.58 @ 300. Very flat. For deer I see no need for heavier bullets which of course will work.

What do you think would be the heaviest bullet my gun would shoot accurately? Looking at the 140 ++ weights. I ask as I would like to buy different weights for load development but don’t want to buy something that for sure will not work. I ask this so when I see a good buy on a box of bullets I can say yeah or nea.

I'd buy a few different ones and give them a try. I have an 8.5 twist that shoots 130 Accubonds, 142 LRAB's & 147 ELD-M's really well but I live at about 5,000' and hunt from 7,000' - 9,000'.

My sendero shoots 140 bergers and retumbo in the .30”
Only problem is when it hits the transonic it falls apart, but that’s at 1300.

Your experience is a completely different monster. Remington had their heads way up there buts on the 264 twists.

I have never shot any thing heavier than a 140gr in my 264's, but in my other 6.5's 260, 6.5x06, 6.5WSM with 1/8 twist I have shot bullets from 85 gr Sierra to 160gr Hornady with excellent results. It's a matter of what makes you happy. Do you want to hunt or shoot long range competition.? As to hunting I take elk each season with the Barnes 120 old style X & the new TSX. They give complete penetration on elk even thru heavy bone . Have to be tried to understand. When loading the Barnes TSX or Hornady GMX remember always start with the bullet .050 off the lands. You may or may not have to adjust OAL for best accuracy. Some where between .030 & .070 off the lands you will find your rifles accuracy sweet spot. For long range hunting ( 400yds + ) there is the Barnes 127gr LRX. Super high BC. With a super slow powder I drive the 120's to 3450FPS & with the 127 gr to 3400FPS. Your 1/9 twist will handle these bullets with no issue. Maybe you might need a 1/8 for the 160's. Maybe maybe not . Velocity makes a difference.

I always shoot the 140’s, kills anything I shoot. Here is two Sako’s and a pre-64. All with 26” barrels.

My dies and brass will be here in a couple days. I will be working up several loads while I’m waiting for my scope to arrive. From what I’m reading I should be able to shoot heavy 140’s down to 100 grain. Thanks

The 125 Partition is a fine bullet, 120 Barnes also. Mine seem to shoot all of them well.

64 grains of retumbo is where I am at. But I hear good things about RL 33

My 264 was a 700 R.

It liked 140 grain Nosler Partitions which were the old style - turned on screw machines. I used surplus 4831. It was less than 1MOA 5 shots.

I'm having pretty good results with 130 NABs over Re-33.

My 1:9" twist PacNor/M700 shoots 139 Scenars best (under MOA). US869 was my huckleberry in the 75.o - 77.o gr range.

It shoots the 140 NAB and 142 ABLR right at MOA. It does not like the 142 Sierra HPBT MK very much. Have not tried the 143 ELD-X yet.

Today I picked up some Retumbo. I have several other 264wm friendly powders already. Tomorrow I plan to round up some bullets.

Today I picked up some 140 Accubonds. Whitaker’s had the Nosler LR bullets in 129 and 142. I thought I would try the AB and go from there.
