Don't have any pics handy, but maybe they have some on Hill Country Rifles website. Have one in a 338 Federal. I believe Hill Country developed that stock when J Earl was there for use with the Win Model 70 action. Its a classic American style stock with very nice lines.....

I had one float through my inventory. It has excellent lines, but I ended up flipping it instead of building a gun with it because of the grip radius. The top of the grip was shaped more like the narrow end of a chicken egg, rather than the large/round end. It just seemed like that would drive into the webbing of the shooter's hand in an unpleasant way.

It could well be that someone who has actually shot one would tell me that my fears were unfounded.

Your fears were unfounded.

They are a pleasure to shoot. I have a 338 Winchester Magnum stocked in a McMillan Bridges with Edge fill and it's a pussy cat at 8lbs scoped..

I also have a 300 Weatherby Magnum in standard fill that is likewise easy to shoot.

Now that I think about it I have had Winchester 70s stocked with the Bridges in the following calibers;

.308 Edge fill
.30-06 Edge Fill
.300 Weatherby Standard Fill
.280 Edge
7mm Rem Mag Edge
338 Win Mag Edge
.350 Rem Mag Edge

I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting about over the years.

I also had a model 70 classic stainless in 340 Weatherby mag that I had made up in an Echols Legend stock. The legend is thicker through the grip and through the foreend, I personally prefer the Bridges

Please, can someone post a picture of this stock and if they are available anywhere. Timely as I'm in the process of searching for a stock on a current 6.5-06 build.

They will sell you just the stock. While it's been a few years since I bought one, I have sent them the barreled action and they bedded the stock, and they also have sent me a stock to have a local smith bed it.

Maybe if you have real small hands. The grip on that stock just looks uncomfortable to me...

Be interesting to get a tape around the grip, or hold one. Doesn’t look smaller than the grip on a Montana or Compact. Both of which are already quite trim to be sure.

I rather like the looks of that Bridger stock.

I’d have to agree with Doug here. While the grip may not be for everybody, the 308 and 7.25lb scopes 35 Whelen that I’ve had with the Bridges both handled recoil and flip quite well.

My glove size is a L/XL, depending upon brand.

I can easily palm a basketball.

As far as handling recoil goes, the 338 Win Mag has Edge fill and shoots a 225 TSX at 2900 FPS. Rifle weight is 8 lb exactly with a Zeiss 2.5 X8 Conquest.

tag to see if anyone finds a current source for these. I searched all over a year or so back and no one seemed to have the "rights' to them anymore. Last I saw Earl Bridges now works at Boedeker Brothers Armory in Texas and their facebook shows a custom rifle he built with the stock in June 2016. I emailed them a while back to see if they were selling the stocks and never received a reply.

That's disappointing.

In that case I would call McMillan and ask them who has the proprietary rights to that stock.

Contact J Earl Bridges at 830-305-7706. Spoke with him August 2017, really easy to talk to and helpful. Price for finished stock was same as a standard McMillan IIRC. He requires a deposit and then submits the order to McMillan as he has rights to the mold.

The “Rifleman” mcmillian that Hill Country exclusively carries is one of my favorite hunting stocks as well. I purchased one from them in May 2017 and called the other day to purchase another and was told they no longer sell them unless they are part of a $1200 accurizing job. Disappointing but what can ya say.

I have heard that these are difficult to shoot well. Something about the grip. Was looking at doing a build, talked to someone (gunmaker) who had done multiple builds with them and he steered me away.

The grip is very open. It's one of those things you either like or don't, with little middle ground. I fall into the "don't" category.

I'm going to give him a call this week, thanks for the new info. If anyone has one they want to sell, finished or semi-inletted for a Win 70 shoot me a PM, would prefer to avoid the Mcmillan wait.

You can get them for a M70 unlike the sporter which is only inletted for remington & the clones.

I'm a M70 fan and it's frustrating dealing with McMillan because their selection of stocks for M70's sucks, it seems like every pattern they'll inlet for a M70 was designed in the '60's with way too much drop at the comb. I have a couple in Hunter's Edge stocks which are good except the comb is far too low so I have to raise them with a pad. I've never handled a Bridges pattern stock but it looks really good to me. To me it looks like a slimmed down Echols legend and the comb is actually high enough for a scope.

I was looking to try a Rifleman stock and used HCRs web contact page to find out if the stock could be bought - alone. The response I got was the same as the above, "not unless it's part of a $1200 accurizing job." Sadly that won't be happening.

Seems it's proprietary like D'Arcy's Legend, also made by McM, but only available from him.

I would like to see photos of that stock and wonder how it compares with others, as aalf has asked.

BTW, Photobucket sucks...

Rifleman is pretty close to the McM Game Scout/Game Warden/Game Hunter. It has the high comb of the Game Hunter, but is is sans the cheek rest of the Game Hunter. Comb is higher on the Rifleman than on the McM Game Scout/Warden by about 5/16 of an inch. Additionally, I don't think that the grip is as vertical as the McM variants.

Best I could do for a pic since HCR doesn't seem to want to advertise the Rifleman, and all remnants of the Precision Stock Works web site and its contents are long gone.

Bridges is trimmer with a straighter grip. The JEB stock seems ideally geared to off hand shooting. SAKO Classic is one of my favorite McMillan stocks, both are good but next one I get will be a JEB model.

Not side by side, but have owned them both for M70s. The grip is different (as noted above) and I find the Sako more comfortable... but the shorter and timer for end of the Bridges is nice for slimmer/shorter barrels.
Sako Classic is still my favorite McMillan M70 stock for anything over a 22" barrel (and I've tried every other option)

Thanks to the contact info in this thread I talked to Mr. Bridges and will be putting together an order with him once I decide on an action and barrel.

Has anyone put a MRC 1999 in a Bridges pattern? It appears MRC uses a #2 contour barrel on their ASR, seems like it would be a good fit for this stock.

ETA: Failing the above, has anyone put a custom Win 70 w/ a #2 barrel in this stock?

Just trying to make a decision on barrel contour for this stock never having held one. I'm pretty sold on using a MRC action due to the gas handling features as this rifle will be used by my wife and daughter.

If a #2 is too heavy, I can buy an action and have a lighter barrel installed.

Yes at least for a M700 they were so should be for the M70 as well. Not sure but these might have a solid action area that is inletted after the molding. Call JEB a very nice gentleman to deal with and his wife is quite knowledgeable too and sometimes takes the orders.

Yes, I believe they charge an extra $35 to fit the tang on 70s.

Here is a side by side of the Bridges and the Legend (top) from when I had both at once. Hope it is helpful.

Wow - with the exception of the more open grip on the bridges, it looks like a scaled down version of the echols. Seems like similar comb height.

How in the world does HCR stay in business? I've never seen gunsmith and custom gun prices so high, for so little return.

A chunk of their "custom guns" are R700 barred actions, an HCR accruizing job, and a $3500-$4000 price tag. What a joke, but I guess they sell em to suckers every day.

Yikes. 4 grand for a 700 in a McMillan stock with a chromoly (?) barrel and a TT trigger?

Oh yeah, it’s cerakoted too.

https://www.hillcountryrifles.com/product/custom-264-win-mag-on-m700-action/

It’s safe to assume there is more dollars than sense out there.

I had HCR rebarrel a 7mm WSM to .350 Rem Mag, and a .30-06 (IIRC) to .280 Rem.

I was less than impressed, but I used them one last time to do a 7mm Dakota off a stainless Winchester 70 originally in 300 Win Mag.

When I got it back it would not feed. I had to send it out to Penrod to get it straightened out.

I would not recommend them. Call Lex Webernick at Rifles, Inc and be happy.
