Looking at a CZ from Whittakers...

the one "in stock" have a 21 inch barrel and a one in 12 twist...

the "out of stock" one has a 24 inch barrel, and a one in 9 twist... plus is less in price.

handloading what are the limitations of the 1 in 12 vs the 1 in 9 twists....

can't seem to get an answer out of Whittakers...

any help would be appreciative...

cheers and best regards
seafire

My Ruger is one in 9. It shots dime size groups. I would go 1 in 9".

Whats the longest bullet available for the 17 Hornet? 25gr tipped vmax? Not a ton of .17 bullets, are there? What does the bullet manufacturer claim is needed to stabilize?

That's where I'd look.

I would go with 1-9" as well. 1-12" might handle the 20 grain bullets, almost certainly not 25s, especially the V-Max. I wouldn't risk it.

Because I also have 17 Fireball, I will only shoot 20 grain VMAX in my Hornet. It's a 77/22 that I had re-barreled. I'll have to check the twist on it.

Seafire,

The 1-12 will stabilize any 20-grain .17 bullets, hollow-point or tipped, which in my experience are the most useful for ground squirrels and prairie dogs. If you want to shoot 25-30 grain bullets, for whatever reason, the 1-9 will do the job nicely.

I wonder if the quicker twist would add any to the "splat" factor? Would be interesting to try them side by side.

Both CZ's, the American and the Varmint model, have the 1 - 9 twist. I have the Varmint model, Mule Deer's load with AA1680, I believe, is as accurate as is the Hornady factory loads in mine.

I’m confused. I wasn’t aware CZ made a Hornet with a 1 in12” twist?

Darrik,

I just checker your website. It says there's a CZ .17 Hornet available with a 1:12 twist. Product code is listed as
101-14203.

Our mistake on the description! They’re all 1 in 9”. I just verified it with my rep.

I’ll make sure it gets fixed. Thanks John.
