Marlin as "common folk." Those early color case hardened 1893s and 1894s are some pretty damn nice rifles. But come to think of it, there's nothing wrong with common folk and the tools they use. I resemble that more than the rich folk. Thanks for putting up the pictures.

Savage grade "B" checkering, flame style. Rory,i dont have a 1899C with "B' checkering :),what caliber is your rifle in? It's in 303, has B engraving also and what appears to be factory 24" barrel. Probably a year or so too early to be a catalogued Leader Grade, but same options plus the 24" barrel. And no.. It's not for sale.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Those pigs should be wearing top hats and tails cause that is one classy PIG GUN! The man does have talent. Thanks, Cheryl. "...most of the special order early guns were in 303 !!" Savage was the only one offering the .303 round and without charging a premium over the .30-30 or one of those other obsolescent black powder Winchester rounds.

To All,
It is my OPINION that even most of the folks who are "unimpressed with" or even "despise" Savage's products, like the Model 99 in all of its forms. = At least in 6 decades of hunting I've NOT met anyone who doesn't like the 99.

Thanks Don The rifle is very special , please thank Cheryl.
I remember a story that only one 1899 with a take down barrel was factory made but sometimes my memberer is not always spot on.
I think LRF gave his French gray recipe here as well?
Mud season and cabin fever are the worste.

My "F" engraved 1899 lettered as having been first produced in 30-30 but was later changed to .303 during the 5 years it was at the factory. It was manufactured in 1901, shipped in 1906.

David Thinking out loud I wonder if the SN of your F would coincide with the 30 sav (30-30) markings? If so maybe that was why it was changed?
