Good point. the serial # is 211xx. The blueing has been removed from the action by someone. I wondered if the factory did that so that the engraving was easier to see. But then again it does show some wear and tear. Maybe one of the previous 3 owners removed the blueing. I'm the 4th owner if I can believe the guy who sold it to me. left side of receiver right side David

Do you think the rifle was case hardened? A picture of the open action where the bolt protects the insides from sunlight might tell the story

Bottom near lever looks like it was blued? Any blue on top of tang?

I find rifles with the most engraving generally loose their bluing and case colors are less pronounced on them over the years. Here is a 5-4 engraved marlin i have that has lost most of its color.

Traces of blueing show in hidden places. Don, the guy I got it from said he inherited from his Dad. His Dad got it from the guy whose name is engraved on the bottom of the receiver. The original owner had hocked it in the 1930's or '40's, the Dad bought the pawn ticket and got it from the pawn shop. All of this supposedly happened in Northern Washington, around Bellingham I believe. I wrote everything up and put it away where it's not accessible right now. David

To All,
Just ONE of the things that I love about both the Savage 99 & the Remington Model 760 (as well as pump shotguns)is those wide flat sides that just "scream" to be engraved with fancy script or hunting scenes.
Note: When he was 2 days old (in 1983), I bought my nephew a Model 870 in .410=3" & had it fully engraved by a lady in VA. - One side commemorates his birth/parents & the other side is my idea/design & "somewhat whimsical", in that it features a Springer Spaniel puppy, flushing (or perhaps fleeing from??) a whole covey of quail. (When it was completed & "at the request of the engraving lady" it was displayed at a few gun-shows in MD, PA, VA & WV. = The "nice lady" said to me when I finally got to pick it up for his 2YO Christmas present, that she had had DOZENS of people who wanted to buy it.)
yours, tex

David, I just went and checked a few rifles and one of my early catalogs and that is the early "B" style checkering. I have a rifle s/n 53.xxx that has the old style "B" checkering and i have a rifle s/n 54.xxx with the new style "B" checkering The only reason for the xxx in the serial numbers is i didn't write them down ,and couldn't remember them from the vault to the house !!

Thanks Don, had my other cataract surgery yesterday and can't see worth a darn today. It should clear up in a day or two so I can see the pics clearly. This is a subject I want to cover in depth in the next book. David

The early "B" checkering (referred to as the $8 checkering) was changed to the later version in 1904 when the Leader was added (1904 catalog). Not sure when the old "B" checkering was totally fazed out but they only list the new "B" in the 1905 catalog.

Those rifles are two of the nicer savages i own, there pretty close together on the shelf and i didn't realize they were checkered differently, till i had them both out at once.

I was in the vault earlier and noticed a early 1899B with the second style "B"checkering. That tells me there was quite an overlap between the 2 styles of "B" checkering. Heres the data on this rifle . 1899B,s/n 37.727 pistol gripped,"B"checkering, fancy walnut stock, with silver badge for owners initials,303 caliber, early M.S.A. tang sight, and early savage repeating arms hard rubber shotgun style buttplate. heres a few pictures.
