Don, Do you think the guy in Vermont will let me photograph the G&H rifle for my next book? There has been some beautiful work done on Savages aftermarket and I want to include some of them. Great pics. David

The Savages sit pretty close to the Marlins, but then again they are closely related ! I only let them get close to the 1881 deluxe marlin in 32-40,dont want them to hang out with the common folk !!!

4th picture down, 2nd rifle from top. Is that flames on the pistol grip checkering? It looks like a K, but I've never seen checkering like that. Far too early to be a 99K: special order buttplate (hrb or shotgun?), special order fancy wood and higher grade checkering. That checkering was used on the Leader Grade. Mine isn't nearly as nice as Don's, but I do have closeups of the checkering handy.

Well they are both custom guns, one is a 99f that has a case colored receiver and checkering, i did the factory style checkering after these photos. The other rifle is a custom rifle i bought off Jed years ago it was made by forum member LRF and is known as the pig gun ,there was a lot of discussion here with pictures, one of a kind octagon takedown with engraving and french greyed receiver. maybe someone here can link to the old thread. I dont have any newer pictures of it.

I remember the first time I walked through that door. You said this is nothing compared to the collection in Maine. Well, maybe so. But between the two of them Ill bet that pretty much nothing is left uncovered. Most question a detail and refer to "data" while you guys only have to take a short walk and produce an in hand example. Thanks for the trip down memory lane..

LBK,I think i called it more of an "assortment" then a collection ! That was quite a while ago when you first came to visit, right after i got it set up.I think i have a pretty good assortment of pre 1960 stuff, not many of the tang safety vintage.

Marlin as "common folk." Those early color case hardened 1893s and 1894s are some pretty damn nice rifles. But come to think of it, there's nothing wrong with common folk and the tools they use. I resemble that more than the rich folk. Thanks for putting up the pictures.

Savage grade "B" checkering, flame style. Rory,i dont have a 1899C with "B' checkering :),what caliber is your rifle in? It's in 303, has B engraving also and what appears to be factory 24" barrel. Probably a year or so too early to be a catalogued Leader Grade, but same options plus the 24" barrel. And no.. It's not for sale.

Those pigs should be wearing top hats and tails cause that is one classy PIG GUN! The man does have talent. Thanks, Cheryl. "...most of the special order early guns were in 303 !!" Savage was the only one offering the .303 round and without charging a premium over the .30-30 or one of those other obsolescent black powder Winchester rounds.

To All,
It is my OPINION that even most of the folks who are "unimpressed with" or even "despise" Savage's products, like the Model 99 in all of its forms. = At least in 6 decades of hunting I've NOT met anyone who doesn't like the 99.

Thanks Don The rifle is very special , please thank Cheryl.
I remember a story that only one 1899 with a take down barrel was factory made but sometimes my memberer is not always spot on.
I think LRF gave his French gray recipe here as well?
Mud season and cabin fever are the worste.

My "F" engraved 1899 lettered as having been first produced in 30-30 but was later changed to .303 during the 5 years it was at the factory. It was manufactured in 1901, shipped in 1906.

David Thinking out loud I wonder if the SN of your F would coincide with the 30 sav (30-30) markings? If so maybe that was why it was changed?

Good point. the serial # is 211xx. The blueing has been removed from the action by someone. I wondered if the factory did that so that the engraving was easier to see. But then again it does show some wear and tear. Maybe one of the previous 3 owners removed the blueing. I'm the 4th owner if I can believe the guy who sold it to me. left side of receiver right side David

Do you think the rifle was case hardened? A picture of the open action where the bolt protects the insides from sunlight might tell the story

Bottom near lever looks like it was blued? Any blue on top of tang?

I find rifles with the most engraving generally loose their bluing and case colors are less pronounced on them over the years. Here is a 5-4 engraved marlin i have that has lost most of its color.

Traces of blueing show in hidden places. Don, the guy I got it from said he inherited from his Dad. His Dad got it from the guy whose name is engraved on the bottom of the receiver. The original owner had hocked it in the 1930's or '40's, the Dad bought the pawn ticket and got it from the pawn shop. All of this supposedly happened in Northern Washington, around Bellingham I believe. I wrote everything up and put it away where it's not accessible right now. David

Looks like "C" grade checkering to me ! The "B" grade is the flame style.

To All,
Just ONE of the things that I love about both the Savage 99 & the Remington Model 760 (as well as pump shotguns)is those wide flat sides that just "scream" to be engraved with fancy script or hunting scenes.
Note: When he was 2 days old (in 1983), I bought my nephew a Model 870 in .410=3" & had it fully engraved by a lady in VA. - One side commemorates his birth/parents & the other side is my idea/design & "somewhat whimsical", in that it features a Springer Spaniel puppy, flushing (or perhaps fleeing from??) a whole covey of quail. (When it was completed & "at the request of the engraving lady" it was displayed at a few gun-shows in MD, PA, VA & WV. = The "nice lady" said to me when I finally got to pick it up for his 2YO Christmas present, that she had had DOZENS of people who wanted to buy it.)
yours, tex

David, I just went and checked a few rifles and one of my early catalogs and that is the early "B" style checkering. I have a rifle s/n 53.xxx that has the old style "B" checkering and i have a rifle s/n 54.xxx with the new style "B" checkering The only reason for the xxx in the serial numbers is i didn't write them down ,and couldn't remember them from the vault to the house !!

Thanks Don, had my other cataract surgery yesterday and can't see worth a darn today. It should clear up in a day or two so I can see the pics clearly. This is a subject I want to cover in depth in the next book. David

The early "B" checkering (referred to as the $8 checkering) was changed to the later version in 1904 when the Leader was added (1904 catalog). Not sure when the old "B" checkering was totally fazed out but they only list the new "B" in the 1905 catalog.

Those rifles are two of the nicer savages i own, there pretty close together on the shelf and i didn't realize they were checkered differently, till i had them both out at once.

I was in the vault earlier and noticed a early 1899B with the second style "B"checkering. That tells me there was quite an overlap between the 2 styles of "B" checkering. Heres the data on this rifle . 1899B,s/n 37.727 pistol gripped,"B"checkering, fancy walnut stock, with silver badge for owners initials,303 caliber, early M.S.A. tang sight, and early savage repeating arms hard rubber shotgun style buttplate. heres a few pictures.

It's interesting that those SRAC303 plates carried over. I have one on a rifle from around the same time. We need to collect some data on what serial range these show up on. Maybe they found a box full rat holed away and decided to use them up?
Anyone have a rifle with one on it? Need a serial number.

Rick, I went and checked my other early rifles,1895 and 1899 ,and i had a 1895 with a flat steel shotgun style buttstock, and an early 1899f saddle ring carbine with the flat steel type shotgun butt. my first rifle with the standard style hard rubber buttplate is the 54.000 one but thats the thick one.The first normal hard rubber buttplate is on a early 1899H. Is it possible that the SRA 303 buttplate was the only early hard rubber buttplate until 1904-1905? Don

Possible as there was a statement in the Perris letters about the breakage in fitting non metal plates.
SRAC 51xxx Thick 77xxx Thin 116xxx (earliest 1899-H I have)
When did the thin rubber plate start? The first 1899-H in my data that is not engraved is in the 69xxx range. Not many H's till the .22HP came out. I guess I need to look at some log sheets.

51261, 1899-A-SR, .303 SAV, SRAC plate, late 1904-early 1905 production.
This period of production looks like they were way ahead on serial numbering receivers as the production dates in 1905 jump all around.
Rory found an ad stating that the 1899-H would be shipping the first of 1906 vs 1905. That would put the H starting around 67000-68000.
Anyone with an 1899-H earlier than Loggah's 76456???

My 25-35 with high grade wood and checkering isn't far behind Don's, serial #79728. It's in my book. Don't have time to post a pic now. David
