Szhin, i wouldnt hesitate to use a 243 with a good bullet on any elk, but i would limit my shot choices as MD previously stated.

I would think a better choice would be a bigger cal and heavier bullet due to, as you say, any bullet that can break through bone and get the job done.

Do you not think a bigger, heavier GOOD bullet cant do that better?

What would do better on a big bull quartering away go7ng over a ridge at 350 yards where the, dare we say, perfect hit is not made and the hit is in a hindquarter and needs to get through the abdomen and into the chest cavity?

I will agree, a 22 or 9 mm is just as deadly as a 45, if you hit a man between the eyes. In WW2 Im glad my uncle had a 45.

At what distance was that shot taken? I bought a .270 WIN for an elk hunt and my buddy is telling me I'm an idiot for not buying a 7 mag. I may buy the exact same rifle in 7 mag later this year anyway, because why not? But I'd like to shut them up and knock one down with the 'ol 270.

270 Wins will crush Elk. Good Bullets mean way more than the actual name on the case.

Take good shot with 270 and Elk will drop. Shot placement is key with any caliber

re: the .270 Winchester for elk:

The smallest rifle I've used for elk is a 280 Remington with 160 partitions....so far that combo has resulted in two dead elk with two shots.

I loaded some 160 partitions for a friend with a .270 Winchester....same thing....dead elk.

My personal preference is for a larger bullet but one can't argue with what works.....and there's a lot of testimony here for the old .270 Winchester

There isn't a lick of difference in the performance of these two on elk at all reasonable ranges, given good shot placement and proper bullet construction in both.

If you want to eliminate the bullet construction variable, use Barnes TSX, TTSX or LRX in weights of 129-150 in the ..270 Win or 139-160 in the 7mm Rem Mag.

You'll be fine with a 270 and good bullets - emphasis on good bullets. I shot 2 in 2016 with the ole 270 at a combined 60 yards maybe. 150 grain Partition worked fine. Unfortunately my 270 belongs to some disadvantaged yute in Kansas City....... I'll be toting a 280 AI next year using 160 Accubonds or Partitions. I'll bet it will work.

BTW if you handload, buy some Re 26, load 60 - 61 grains under a 150 Partition then compare to your buddies 7 mag. Won't be a whole lot of difference.
