I found a 1895 marlin jp marked rifle .It's as smooth as silk has a few added features on it .There is a tang site that will will take off don't Want that stuck in me ,a limbsaver pad good addition and a strange large nut on front of the lever that is suppose to make it lever smoother which it feels awesome. Is this jp rifle one of the good ones .It has the 3/4 magazine and pistol grip too .I just got that 444 Winchester didn't want a 4570 but this would be good investment at the price .I can't tell if the stock is cut or not looks like they did for the recoil pad .What is the normal length of pull on these guns ? Dang it's going on.layaway in.the morning !

I can not understand why, but my Guide Gun In 45-70 is one of my most accurate rifles in the safe.

Mine is accurate with loads it likes, but what stands out for me is how smooth the barrel is. It is easily the smoothest factory barrel I have, only the aftermarket barrels that are lapped are smoother.

I have an early Marlin 1895 in 45-70. It has the pistol grip and 22 in barrel. No extra safety.
Marlin traveled down the wrong road, electing to put an extra useless
receiver safety on newer rifles.

Real lawyers, not people or hunters, convinced Marlin to make this major safety mistake

I've had several over the years. Finally bought a Winchester model 71 in 450 Alaskan and never looked back. They're is no comparison to a Winchester and this is from the guy who designed and built the model 89 in 500 Smith and Wesson. Yes I tried a Marlin receiver, broke it pretty quick.

My #1 is obviously not a levergun, but it continually amazes me how well it shoots. To the point of annoying my buddies who insist that a big bore with a rimmed case flinging homemade cast bullets shouldn't be that accurate.
There are a few reasons I think they tend to shoot well.

I've read about a lot of .45-70's that have short to non existant throats (mine included). I pretty well cram any and all of my bullets into the rifling (maybe not as advisable with a levergun) so a) it gets started well into the bore and b) it headspaces on the ogive, driving band, or whatever part of the bullet I've got crammed into the rifling and not on the rim, keeping the case from rattling around in the chamber and the primer firmly against the pin hole.
Also, anything with a .45 Caliber hole in the barrel will have to have a "larger-than-light sporter" barrel contour, along with the resultant rigidity. A pretty famous 'smith that built a pretty famous #1 told me a long time ago that making an accurate big bore was easy, simply because the benefits of added barrel contour are present whether are there whether it's a .22 hole or a .458 hole running through it.

Stupid accurate .45-70's are a pretty cool surprise, but there's no reason they shouldn't be.

Been thinking about trying a Marlin with one of the little 1-4 SWFA's on it. Dialing in 400 grainers from stupid ranges should make for a fun afternoon............

My GS will put 3 405 cast almost in same hole at 100yds. My sharps will put same load as tight as i can hold it with iron. 45/70 and 375 h&h are my two favorites. Have #1's in both and both are stupid accurate. There are more accurate rifles out there at distance but at 100yds or less id put my guide gun against most.

@Potsy--- I have one of the 1-4X SWFAs...you'll be glad you bought it. Very rugged build. Especially like it on my Armalite.

@Phoneman--- Got to agree on the GS. Try some 305gr brass solids...you'll be even happier with it out to 125 meters.

Marlin's lockup isn't as strong as the Winchester 86/71 but on the flip side it's much easier to clean and maintain. The Winchester leverguns are a PITA to take down. I have them and love them, but the reality is Winchesters are somewhat complex in their construction.

Been lurking here for a while, just joined the other day, this is my first post. I am a big fan of lever guns. My hands down favorite is my 1972 Marlin 1895 in 45-70.
