A friend of mine showed me some pictures of some handguns that have been in his family and since he isn't a gun guy didn't really appreciate what he had. The pick certainly is a WW2 German Luger and then there is a WW2 P38 and a .32 Mauser all in very nice condition and at least one of them has the military original holster which adds even more. I looked on Gun Broker to get a rough idea, but if he was willing to sell them Gun Broker gets a percentage and for a high dollar pistol that is some big dollars right? What is the best approach to get the maximum price for a valuable handgun?

Try the Luger & P38 forums, with good pictures. Very knowledgeable people that aren't into taking advantage of folks. Once you have a good idea, post them for sale there. Lugers in particular have taken a slide value-wise lately, though. Something to consider. If it's been refinished, has non-original parts, not in excellent condition, etc, it may not be as valuable as you think. Good photos and an eval on the forums mentioned is a start.

I didn't realize that there were separate forums for just the Luger and P38. Jim is a New York guy and they have such restrictive CCW laws that they need to specify on their CCW permit which handgun they are going to carry, so he has only ever shot the P38. All the others are war souvenirs and haven't probably been shot since then. He said that they had been oiled and kept in a safe deposit box.

GunBroker fees aren't that bad, go check out their fee structure. You will get the most exposure on GB.
