I have been looking for a long time at getting a new spotting scope. I have always used straight scopes. but it seems angled is about twice more popular, at least that is what doug says. for me I understand the advantage of angled. once your on the animal its nicer to view with angled. its less critical to have the exact right tripod height. so its easier for other people to look through the spotter because height isn't as critical. The downside in my mind is quickly getting on the animal. It also seems more difficult to see exactly where the scope is pointing say if your looking in a grid pattern on a mountain. I know there are people that converted to angled after using straight. my question is how did you overcome the downsides of angled,

I had the same concerns with angled spotters, but after awhile it seems to be one of those skills that becomes instinctive. I get on target as fast, and usually faster than my buddies with their straight scopes.

PRO - I like that an angled spotter is positioned lower, which helps with tripod stability.

CON - I find it harder to shield the eyepiece from mist and rain, without a cover/drape. I can protect a straight spotter easier.
