Real estate taxes. I am billed twice. The last two years, I have paid the entire year's tax with the first bill.. I then get billed for the second half again. I am going to only pay the first half, then pay the other bill. I think I've double billed.

What do you folks think? How do you pay your taxes?

Don't know how it is done in Northern Ontario but down south here it is done in two billings, two or three months apart. Each billing is for two quarters of the bill. The reason for the two billings is because usually when the first is sent out any tax increases are unknown so the second billing is changed to reflect increases. I would suggest calling the tax department and asking for an explanation.

What did you do about last years double billing? Did you get it sorted out?

In over 60 years of home ownership I have never had this happen.

Jim

P.S. I assume you are referring to local municipal house taxes. These are not a Provincial tax.

Richard—you must be referring to municipal taxes. I purchased the property I live on Lake Nipigon in 1979. My taxes started out at $9 per year increased to $130 per year and then to $4600,
That’s right $9 to $130 to $4600.

My first tax bill was from the Provincial land tax = $9. After I built my home it was determined I was part of Kilkenny township and my taxes jumped to $130 per year—I really didn’t mind as I kinda felt even Indian kids had a right to an education.

In 2001 we had a municipality whose saw mill closed down and they couldn’t afford their water treatment plant. Their solution was to annex all lake shore property with in 65 miles. That town is 60 miles down the highway from me.

Google ‘Grandby. Colorado, Bulldozer’ — it kinda illustrates how I feel about it.

This is how our tax bill is presented. The only difference seems to be that yours comes from the Province rather than a municipality. I assume this is because it is from a rural or unregulated area. If I think of it the next time I am speaking to my brother I will ask him. He previously worked for the Thunder Bay assessment dept. and the Provincial assessment department.

There should be further charges coming once the tax rate for the year is established. There seems to be only one payment requested at this time, possibly because the amount requested is so low. This should be the same format as in past years.
