Thought I had found an E in 22Hp,which it most likely is, however, it has been re barreled with a Chicopee 24 inch barrel. The barrel address is a style 9. I am assuming this would be an EG barrel but had the idea that those would have been in 22 inch only. Thoughts please.

A Chicopee Falls barrel in 22HP would only be a replacement barrel for an earlier rifle. They didn't make any new 22HP's in Chicopee Falls.
So it likely did start out as a 99E 22HP (or may 30-30?), but sent back to factory for new barrel. Still a cool find!

Thanks, the wood is trash on it but I knew that when I spoke for it. The bore and rifling is quite good, and I plan on putting new wood on and using it as a shooter so in a sense the 24 inch barrel is a bit of a bonus.

We'll be curious to hear/see more details when you get it. I'd like to hear what the twist rate is.

Betting the 24" barrel blank came out of a bin full of barrel blanks destined to go on factory R's or EG's, but it was bored for 22 HP for this "special job" instead of 250 or 300

It was advertised as having a 24" barrel but I assumed that was a mistake. Came from Quebec so there was a bit of a language barrier, plus he was one of those fellows where you ask 3 questions in an email and you get an answer to the first one of the three only. He did say the bore and rifling were good so I decided to take a chance on it. Hoping it will make a good shooter once I get it cleaned up and some new wood on it. As rough as it is, I am actually a bit pleased with it. An E with an EG barrel, how good is that.

Info states that all Chicopee and Westfield replacement brls are 24" and would only be set solid.

This rifle would definitely be an E I believe as SN is W2702xx with all 3 pieces matching the receiver # and non take down fore stock and straight butt stock. I will check the rate of twist shortly.

SN is funky. I don't think any savage 99 serial numbers started with a W.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

I have one of those barrels that is a take down barrel. It shoots very well. I use 63 grain .224 sierra bullets. I think you will like it. Steve

Rate of twist seems to be 1 in 13, does that sound right? I recently saw a chart with ROT on the various 99 calibers, was that on here?
