Anytime you find a bear inside your self proclaimed 30m safe zone the first thing you should do is have a hit from your meth pipe. You obviously have one and you’ll know what you have to do after your use it.

I’ll venture a guess that the OP hasn’t found much success talking himself out of a tussle.

jackmountain, did you know that the 4th highest (? something like that) peak in Washington State is called Jack Mountain? It has some goats on it, some black bear, and surprisingly few deer but my son and I have enjoyed hunting it. Nice backpack hunting (though steep long approach hike) with little need to get hands dirty skinning nor packing out heavy loads! The slopes above timberline are gorgeous in the September high buck season and are loaded with huckleberries. I packed a reflector oven and all the fixins for huckleberry pie up there one time, fabulous pie. Too many miles of hike to pick berries for the freezer.

Jack Mountain is 14th highest peak in Washington State.

It's also a little 3600'ish "hill" here in the old Dominion.
I'd say mountain but you Western States guys would die laughing.

From what I have read or heard directly from people who have been attacked.

Trying to club to death, even a small black bear that has its leg in a hold trap is a mistake.

If a bear charges at close range, unless you are already in a position to pull the trigger, it will get to you before you get your gun up.

Carry a rifle of suitable power (or a shotgun loaded with 00s), and have a pistol securely strapped to your body for use when the bear knocks your
rifle/shotgun away and starts mauling you.

BOTTOM LINE: Somedays you eat the bear, and somedays the bear eats you.

Hey, I got something right and got the number 4 in there! I think I got mixed up with Glacier Peak, where we have also done some hiking/climbing but am not going to bother to check.

Smoke...No Schit! I go bear prepared whenever I’m doing non-hunting activities in the woods...Our bears are out and about and hungry. Tomorrow, is some range time fun for me...And my Ruger 5.5” Redhawk in 44 mag, spinning “Grizzly Cartridge Co. 300grainers @ 1325 FPS makes me happy...😎

I think being mauled to death and consumed after a gallant effort is a Nobel way for a Sportsman to go.

Nobel yes, but beating a bear to death with your bare hands would be badass
