Im looking for a scope. I need a compact scope for a compact gun. Ive considered a leupold 2-7x33 lr duplex, but i dont really want a leupold. I only plan to shoot out to 400-500yds so a bdc reticle should suffice.
Any suggestions? This is a backpacking rifle.

Unfortunately the first question has to be: What's your budget?
Low budget: I'd say Bushnell Elite 3500/4500 or SWFA Fixed 6x
With a little more to spend: SWFA 3-9x, Nighforce SHV 3-10, Meopta Meopro 3-9 or 6x
The trijicon accupoints are intriguing too, but I haven't used one of those.
All of these will be heavier than the Leupold. But probably more reliable too. The leupold 2-7s aren't bad scopes though. I have one mounted on a lightweight .308 and it has held zero consistently. It has been a PITA to get sighted in though.

Actually, your first thought is a good way to go. The Leupold critics are mostly dial twisters. I am a set it and forget it person and my half bushel of Leupolds ranging from about Thirty years old to almost new, have never given me a problem. One of my later additions wears the LRD dots, and I'm beginning to like it. Other than that one, I just hold over based on the cartridge trajectory and the distance.
Best,
Jack

I used a Burris 6X compact on a M98, with aluminum bottom metal in a Brown Precision stock, .30-06 caliber, for years and never found it lacking. Eye relief was a little precise....
Total outfit with sling and 10 rounds went right at 7.5 lbs.
Then I loaned it to a one of my brothers, who pawned it and never reclaimed.
One of "those relatives".
I probably should have killed him before he died of natural causes.

Or perhaps a Burris 2-7x35.

I’d look at the Swarovski z3.
I know you said no leupold but my vx3i 2.5-8x36 is awesome on my mountain rifles, I actually have 2 of them. The z3 is a better scope though, if you look around you could probably find one for 6-700 dollars.
