Anyone shot the Nosler 300 gr. Ballistic Silvertip in their 45-70? Your thought please?

I put a few downrange this morning out of my Guide Gun and pleased with the accuracy. I started with H4198 and only got 1550fps which seemed low. I'm going to switch batteries in my chronograph, I have a goal of about 1800fps. That should be milder recoiling than the 325FTX factory loads I used this year but still plenty potent. I can't speak for the performance on game but intend to use them on whitetail next year.

JSH--- Nosler has a recommended minimum impact velocity listed for that bullet as 1800 so while I'm sure you will kill any whitetail you shoot at you may not get much or any expansion. They say top end velocity is 3200--- must be one tough bullet.

I think they got the min/max off for this one. A buddy shoots them with Sabots and has recovered a couple from his ML kills. They expand pretty decently at ML speeds.

I think that min/max impact velocity is a standard message for Ballistic Tips in general. I don't want to be on the back end of a cartridge that will shoot this bullet to 3200fps...

Not as accurate as 300 Hornady, at least in my rifles.

DF

Edited to add, they're on discount at SPS, half price.

They shoot great in mine with a healthy dose of H4198.
Unfortunately the deer didn't cooperate but they're hell on coyotes at a hair over 2000.

I bet they are! I’m using H4198 as well but no where near that velocity in my GG. Care to share your load?

Hodgdons data for the H4198 is really danged good. Pretty easy to sneak 2200 out of most of the 300 grain bullets.. I'd bet that is where Dewey got his from.

Beretz is right, Hodgdon has some pretty good H4198 data, I've seen 2200 fps with my rifle. Recoil is pretty stout.

It's with that load that I found that the Hornady 300 grain bullet could get destructive, so I tried the Speer Unicor and found it to be a better bullet at that speed.

The most accurate 300 grain load I've cooked up in my rifle has been with the Unicor and 59 grains H322, runs a hair over 2000 fps. Starline brass and CCI 200 primers are the other components.

I may try those Noslers at some point in my .458 SOCOM.

Starline brass, Wolf LR, 300 Ballistic Tip, 49gr Re7. Chrono 1,825 out of H010CC Henry (22"). 1,750 out of H010 (18.4").

5 into 1.5" at 50 with a peep, which is about as good as my 60 year old eyes will do!

Haven't killed anything with them, but hope to remedy that this fall.
